Sagara Sanosuke, born Higashidani Sanosuke, is a main character in the Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X series.
A former member of the disgraced Sekihōtai, in his youth Sanosuke spent the years following the Meiji Revolution venting his frustrations as a "fighting merchant" under the name Zanza, while also hating the Ishin Shishi who framed and murdered his comrades, as well as the flawed Meiji government they created. After meeting Kenshin, however, Sano is able to put his feelings aside and end his fighting merchant days, instead joining Kenshin's group at the Kamiya Dōjō. With his great strength and upright character, Sanosuke is a welcome and invaluable ally in Kenshin's adventures, serving as a trusted friend in times of peace and a reliable "right arm" in battle.
🥋 𝙰𝙿𝙰𝚁𝙸𝙴𝙽𝙲𝙸𝙰𝚂 🥋
Tall and slender, Sanosuke's slight build belies his immense strength and superhuman toughness, but his wild mop of spiky brown hair and intense brown eyes are clear indications of his demeanor. Sano is always seen wearing a white happi jacket with black trim and the kanji character aku (惡) - meaning evil or bad - conspicuously printed on the back in black, as well as white dōgi pants. While he always wears his jacket open, sometimes leaving his arms outside the sleeves so that it simply covers his shoulders, Sanosuke does not wear a shirt underneath it, instead leaving his chest bare while a white sarashi bandage tape is wrapped around his abdomen; this same white sarashi is then wrapped around his ankles and feet.
Additionally, Sano wears a long headband and a matching sarashi around his left forearm, both often depicted in red, but sometimes seen in violet. As he fights with his fists and relies on his ability to absorb damage rather than any defensive abilities, Sano is also frequently seen with bandages, most notably around his right hand and forearm after mastering Futae no Kiwami.
After leaving Japan and heading to the mainland at the end of the series, Sanosuke lets his already wild image grow even wilder by allowing his hair to lengthen into a shoulder-length mane while growing a chin-length beard.

Sanosuke is a straightforward and brazen character who presents a rather complex set of moral principles despite his relatively simple demeanor. He is not particularly concerned with whether a person aligns themselves with "good" or "evil", instead placing importance on whether people are honest with themselves or others. Due in large part to his experience with the Sekihōtai and the Ishin Shishi of the Meiji government, Sanosuke is well aware that definitions of good and evil are arbitrary and subjective (often being altered or alternated depending on who is in a position of authority), and thus does not judge those who choose one path or the other or refuse to do "illegal" or "immoral" things. However, he marks lies and hypocrisy as the height of villainy, and as a result is unusually forthright with his own intentions while also unabashedly critical of the half-truths of others.
Though he typically displays a demeanor that falls somewhere between jovial and sardonic, Sanosuke is described by those close to him as having a temper like fire, a fire that burns with the losses of his past in quiet times, but fully ignites when his fists itch for combat. In keeping with his brash and outspoken nature, and despite his quick tongue, Sanosuke is more likely to speak with his fists than with words. To him, there is no greater pleasure than that found in fighting strong opponents and no greater disappointment than raising his fists against a weaker man. However, when Sanosuke's temper is ignited by the victimization of a friend, he becomes unable to calm down until his fists have reached a target, regardless of the strength of his foe.
However, after coming into contact with Himura Kenshin and the Kamiya Dōjō group, Sanosuke has begun to see a deeper path through life. For the most part, giving up his violent nature, Sano+

+Sano soon begins to admire Kenshin and joins the former hitokiri's mission to help the oppressed and victimized. Along the way, Sanosuke meets more and more people whose strength he begins to evaluate differently; to those whose inner strength resembles Kenshin's, Sanosuke offers his strong right arm, and to those whose ideals are misguided, Sanosuke seeks to provide them with the same inspiration Kenshin has given him.
Unfortunately, Sanosuke's brazen directness comes with a heavy dose of clumsiness. While he is quite observant in crucial situations and particularly astute when it comes to dishing out criticism, he can often be rather simple-minded, requiring those with sharper minds to explain the finer points of any complex occurrence. Sanosuke is also known by his close friends as a guy who takes to loitering around the Kamiya Dōjō looking for free meals, borrowing money from friends with no real promise of repayment, and running up quite a large unpaid bill at the Akabeko.

🥋 TALENTS 🥋
Unfortunately, being a bit of a clumsy guy, Sanosuke doesn't have many abilities outside of the physical realm. However, he makes up for that fact with a body remarkably suited for combat. Despite his lithe build, he is a man who possesses near-superhuman strength capable of kicking down massive doors, splitting trees in half with punches and kicks, shattering rocks with his fists, and incapacitating fearsome opponents with but a flick of his finger. Sanosuke's strength is also what allows him to wield his tremendous signature sword - the Zanbatō - as if completely ignoring its significant weight. Though his relative inexperience with swordsmanship, coupled with the blade's unwieldy size, make it necessary to wield it sideways or vertically, Sanosuke still manages to be quite menacing with it, digging trenches into the earth where his sword strikes the ground and even using it to swat away cannon fire. Even with his monstrous strength, however, Sanosuke's true advantage in combat comes from his herculean toughness; conventional attacks, armed or unarmed, have little to no effect on him and on those rare occasions where he is wounded by a powerful opponent, he is usually able to momentarily ignore the pain and recover from most injuries with unexpected swiftness. As a consequence of this, however, Sanosuke has almost no concept of self-defense beyond simply absorbing blows; he is unaccustomed to blocking or parrying in a fight and often returns to battle before his previous injuries have fully healed. Futae in Kiwami Following his defeat at the hands of Saitō Hajime, it is clear to Sanosuke that his level of strength will be of little help against the enemies to come. Sano's attempts to increase his usefulness lead him into the presence of Yūkyūzan Anji, who teaches him the basics of his secret technique: the Futae no Kiwami.
🥋 TALENTS 2 🥋
+his secret technique: the Futae no Kiwami or "Mastery of Two Layers". With this technique, Sanosuke can supplement his prodigious strength with the ability to completely pulverize matter. He does this by implementing a double strike, first using the proximal interphalangeal joints of his right hand and then bending his hand to strike with the proximal phalanx joints. The first strike counters and negates the natural resistance of the targeted object and the second strike, delivered in 1/75th of a second, hits the targeted object before it can recover from the initial blow, causing it to completely shatter.
Sanjō no Kiwami (Three-Layer Mastery): Original technique by Sanosuke. An improved version of Futae no Kiwami in which, after delivering the first two blows, a third blow is delivered by opening the fist to strike with all five fingers. This technique was used to defeat Yūkyūzan Anji, the original creator of Futae no Kiwami.
Futae no Kiwami: Senken (Two-Layer Mastery: Spinning Fist): A countermeasure used with the Futae no Kiwami. When the opponent throws a punch, the user throws a Futae no Kiwami but with a spinning motion to stop the opponent's punch and land a blow.
🥋 BIOGRAPHY 🥋
Sanosuke is a former member of the Sekihōtai. When the group is destroyed by the Meiji Government, he becomes a fighter-for-hire to take his anger out by fighting. During his introduction in the series, he encounters the drifter Himura Kenshin, who easily defeats him and is able to convince him to quit his mercenary work and instead start protecting people. Following that encounter, Sanosuke becomes Kenshin's best friend, as well as his partner in most of his fights. He also appears in the series' standout film and other media related to the Rurouni Kenshin franchise, including a large number of electronic games and original video animations (OVAs).
Numerous anime and manga publications have commented on Sanosuke's character. Mania Entertainment praised his character development, noting that he becomes more reliable and trustworthy as the series progresses. SciFi.com referred to him as a "video game icon" and highlighted how he is portrayed as a "tragic figure". Sanosuke has been popular among Rurouni Kenshin readers, coming in second place in all popularity polls. Merchandise based on Sanosuke has also been released, including key chains and plush dolls.
Creation and reception Sanosuke was one of the last major characters in the series to be created. Watsuki created him to be Kenshin's best friend, who is willing to hit him when he is sad in order to "wake him up" from his sadness. Although Sanosuke is a main character in the series, Watsuki felt that he couldn't write everything he wanted about him, and thought that making him the main character of a series would prove interesting.
Watsuki describes Sanosuke's visual motif by referencing his design model, Lamp, the main character in Takeshi Obata's Mashin Bōken Tan Lamp-Lamp. Watsuki, who worked as an assistant on Obata's manga, formed the character by making+
🥋 BIOGRAPHY 🥋
+formed the character by doodling in sketchbooks, adding and subtracting elements from the intended character "with the blessings of the original artist, of course." Watsuki saw Harada Sanosuke's version of Shiba Ryōtarō as the one he wanted to use as a model for his design, and has said that the character's large, spiky hair is the strangest element he has ever drawn.
