Rin is the younger brother of Sae Itoshi, who started playing soccer with him at a young age. He has played as a striker on every team he's been on and has always been regarded as one of the best players. Rin's main goal is to become the best striker in the world. He used to be obsessed with beating his brother at soccer and, in turn, getting revenge for abandoning their shared dream, but after Blue Lock's XI played against the Japanese U-20 national team, he put aside his revenge and decided to change so he could become the best striker in the world, defeating anyone in his path and becoming a rival to Yoichi Isagi, seeking, in his words, to destroy him.

Rin is a tall teenager with a slender but strong build, noticeably taller than Yoichi Isagi, who is older than him. He has dark, shoulder-length hair with bangs that cross his face from left to right, narrow blue-green eyes, and distinctive eyelashes that he shares with his brother Sae Itoshi. As a child, Rin looks practically the same; his facial features only become more defined as he grows. In Blue Lock, Rin wears the standard uniform (black with blue stripes) and tracksuit. During the Second Selection in Team Red and the Third Selection in Team A, he wore the number 1 jersey. During the match against the Japanese U-20 team, he wore the number 10 jersey and the captain's armband, being ranked number 1 in Blue Lock. During the Neo Egoist League, he wears the Paris X Gen uniform with the number 9 jersey.

As a child, Rin was very innocent and awestruck by his brother, Sae, wanting nothing more than to become a cool and strong player like him. He started playing football because his brother told him to, following his orders without question. While playing football together, Rin listened to what Sae said and adjusted accordingly. When Sae went to Spain, Rin discovered that football was harder without his brother, but he strived to be like him and replace him. This is where the essence of Rin's playing style would begin to shift from his instinctive style to a more logical one. Initially, he was a good team player and captain of his high school team, and seemed to get along well with some of his teammates. However, due to his consequences with his brother, he has become cold, direct, and overly serious. He is totally focused on football, to an almost obsessive degree, and is also very selfish, always prioritizing his own goals and motivations over others. Rin has a lot of pride as a striker, bordering on arrogance, as he frequently describes the football and way of thinking of other people as "lukewarm" or "mediocre." These gestures and behaviors came from his brother. In an attempt to be like his brother, Rin copies his words and embodies his way of thinking. Rin seems to respect almost no one. He will only acknowledge your presence if you have a notable and bothersome skill/influence on the soccer field. He seems to have no friends, only rivals (only Isagi and Bachira apparently on generally good terms with him). During the match against the Under-20 team, he is more talkative with the team, giving instructions on the field and conversing specifically with Isagi. Rin is committed to a post-workout routine at the end of each day to improve his physique, and he is often found in the training room doing exercises or weightlifting.

Despite his arrogance and coldness, Rin truly lives and breathes soccer, dedicating every waking moment to improving himself. This mentality combined with his personality is what makes him the prime candidate for Blue Lock's supposed best striker. All Rin does is allow him to beat his older brother and end the rivalry, but after Rin overcomes his revenge against his brother and his rivalry with his teammates, he achieves clarity in his decisions. He now aims to break free from everything that binds him and establish his own identity as a selfish individual, without relying on his brother, teammates, or rivals.

Archetype Playmaker: A player who controls the flow of the team's offensive play and is often involved in passing moves that lead to goals, through their vision, technique, ball control, creativity, and passing ability. When younger, Rin was an instinctive player, but his brother's coaching and guidance caused him to develop a remarkably logical and predictive playing style. Whether on offense or defense, Rin's playing style consists of picking up on the skills of both his teammates and opponents and forcing their best plays and skills, manipulating them in his efforts to score goals for himself.

Superior Footballing Technique: Rin is one of only two players in Blue Lock with top-tier statistics, alongside Ryusei Shidou. During the Third Selection, he averaged 2.5 goals per game, the highest among the top 6. His spatial awareness, ball control, power, and shooting accuracy are rivaled only by a handful of players. While Shidou can be described similarly, what makes Rin the best in Blue Lock is his willingness to cooperate and create chemistry with his teammates, whereas Shidou scores goals completely independently. Rin's experience and techniques are advanced enough that he can act as captain, serve as the focal point of an offense, play defense, and even outplay high-level defenders, using his own strengths against them.

Perfect Shooting Accuracy: Rin's main weapon is his high-precision shooting. His accuracy in both shots and passes is near perfect, as demonstrated when he kicked two balls in such a way that they traveled on different trajectories but still hit each other in mid-air. Rin's kicks are so accurate that he can score from long range; Isagi implied that he could potentially score from anywhere under 35 meters, free kicks, and even directly from corner kicks. Even when physically pressured by players like Ryusei Shidou or Tabito Karasu, he is capable of taking an accurate shot. Oliver Aiku notes that his shooting power and accuracy decrease when using his left foot, but in most conditions Rin can shoot, it is at the target. Rin needs space and range to set up his shooting pattern, the denial of which can result in his shot missing. However, he uses his other weapons to meet many of both, making him one of Blue Lock's top scorers.

High-Speed Precise Free Kick: Rin fires an incredibly fast free kick with incredible accuracy. This free kick was so fast and accurate that it flew over Isagi's head without giving him a chance to react. Vertically Rotating Direct Shot: A direct shot from the corner, aimed at the far top corner of the goal. This shot can catch players off guard if they aren't expecting it, although it can be avoided through positioning.

Baseline Shot: Rin attempted to replicate his brother's shot by dribbling toward the baseline and using his left foot to fire the ball over the goalkeeper and into the other side's net. However, the decreased power and accuracy of the shot meant his shot was saved and hit the post. Jump Shot: After feinting to evade an opponent's defense, Rin lifts the ball and performs a jumping roundhouse kick. With this technique, Rin can shoot with terrifying accuracy and evade an opponent's challenge.

Trivela (Shot): A technique in which the ball is applied with spin using the outside of the foot. Rin hides his form, forcing the assumption that he will shoot with his left foot, before shooting with his right. Rin is capable of doing this and scoring from outside the box, as he demonstrated against the Japan U-20 national team. Trivela (Pass): A technique in which the ball is spun using the outside of the foot. Rin can use this technique to pass the ball, manipulating the opponent into believing their pass failed, only to have it spin toward its destination.

Oppressive Pass: Rin makes a difficult pass to his teammate in order to continue a play. He'll typically play this pass in the optimal space for his teammate to reach and return the pass (in Aryu's case) or in the space where he expects his teammate to advance (in Bachira's case). This pass, unlike a more creative one, challenges the limitations of Rin's team, forcing them to exceed their expectations.

Spatial Awareness: Rin analyzes the entire field, including his own positions, those of his teammates, and his opponents, to determine the best play. Rin's tactical ability and spatial awareness are at such a level that only Isagi can understand, counter, and rival his analytical ability. Rin is routinely able to predict the positioning and movements of other players, including Isagi, setting traps and lures to lure them into unfavorable positions, intercepting their plays, and setting up his own.

Spacing: By reading her opponent's weapon, as well as the positions of other players on the field, Rin spaces herself in such a way that allows her to predict and respond to whatever they decide to do.

Timing: Rin can also use his spatial awareness defensively; by reading and understanding the essence of his opponent's football, he can overlap his thoughts with theirs to predict what they will do next. He used this to stop Sae and Shidou's combined offense during the match against the Japanese U-20 National Team. However, focusing solely on playing defense makes it difficult for him to incorporate himself into the offense to score his own goals.

Off-the-ball moves: A term used to describe moments when players are not in possession of the ball. Rin uses these moves to position himself in an opponent's blind spot, as well as to maneuver into scoring positions. He does this after determining the field of vision of players on the field, similar to Isagi.

Positioning: Rin has incredible positioning, constantly moving into areas where he can receive the ball in space and still score a goal. If Rin realizes he won't receive a pass, he always positions himself in a spot where he could score if he received the ball by chance. He demonstrated this positioning during the Second Selection, as well as during the match against the Japanese U-20 National Team. Rin also uses this defensively in combination with his spatial awareness. After using his space, Rin gives himself enough room to predict where the opponent will likely break through and then uses his positioning to intercept them.

Super Speed Interlock: By using another player's movement as a precursor, Rin moves into a position where he can perform a quick cross into open space. He used this alongside Bachira to score against the World Five.

Puppet Control Football: Rin's primary style of play involves controlling and manipulating his opponent's thoughts. After identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each player on the field, Rin uses his superior technique, tactical skill, and physical ability to manipulate them into scenarios that will result in a goal. He can do this by using his own skills against the opponent or by combining his strengths with those of his team. This style of football pushes his team's skills to the limit and beyond, resulting in highly complex and effective passages of play that often result in a goal.

Feints: By positioning herself within shooting range, Rin manipulates her opponent into believing she will shoot. This lures the opponent into attempting a block, before feinting to avoid it. Rin can also use this in reverse. By changing her form and concealing her movement, she tricks her opponent into believing she won't shoot before she actually does.

Marseille Roulette: After manipulating her opponent into believing she will perform a normal feint, Rin switches to a roulette to bypass her defense.

Elastic Nutmeg: Rin kicks the ball sideways with the outside of his foot to force a challenge from his opponent, before using the inside of his foot to push the ball between their legs and pass them. He used this to pass to Sendou.

Flow: Flow, as described by Ego, is the state of "total immersion" or "being in the zone." It is the state of mind where a person engaged in some activity is completely immersed in a feeling of energized focus, total involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. Rin finally reached Flow in the final minutes of the match against the Japanese U-20 National Team. Rin's soccer style usually revolves around precisely calculating the players' weapons on the field and bringing them out to utilize them, manipulating the field to achieve the best way to score. However, when in Flow, instead of bringing out other players' weapons to utilize them efficiently, Rin brings out his weapons to shut them down. This usually involves Rin harassing them in some way, in order to use their most powerful weapon, before outright beating them. While in Flow, Rin is seen to be several levels above his standard skills. Rin was able to completely defeat Teppei Neru, Miroku Darai, and Kazuma Niou in quick succession, using each of his weapons against them. Even Aiku couldn't stop him alone, but with Shidou's help, they were able to pressure Rin. Despite this, Rin was able to execute a powerful curved shot that missed by only a few centimeters. Rin was even able to neutralize Sae's dribble, as seen in the final minute of the match against the Japanese U-20 National Team.

Opposite Acceleration: When faced with someone who has speed as a weapon, Rin will hit the ball to the side to cause their forward acceleration, before suddenly accelerating in the opposite direction, knocking them off their feet in the process. She used this to outrun Neru.

Off-the-ball moves: When facing someone who uses off-the-ball moves as a weapon, Rin will cross them several times to get behind them, before using his hand to prevent them from turning around and stopping them. He used this to outplay Darai.

Total Center of Gravity Explosion: When facing someone with core strength as a weapon, Rin will force a physical pressure duel by throwing the ball as bait. When they charge, Rin will shift into a low center of gravity stance to break their balance, using their own strength against them. He used this to overpower Niou.

His given name, Rin (凛りん, Rin?), means "cold, dignified". His surname, Itoshi (糸いと師し, Itoshi?), means "master of threads", referring to his football experience. Therefore, his name can be interpreted as "master of the cold thread" or "master of the worthy thread".
