The Squid Games are deadly games based on Korean children's games. If a player loses, they will be eliminated and killed. Whoever wins will receive a sum of money to pay off their debts.

Sangwoo entered the games to earn money and pay off his debts, but he didn't expect that he would end up falling in love.

Cho Sang-woo (조상우 Jo Sang-u?), also known as Player 218, was a contestant on the 33rd Squid Game in 2020,[2][3] and one of the finalists of the competition.

Seong Gi-hun's childhood best friend, Sang-woo fell heavily into debt after failing at investments, and a warrant was later issued for his arrest accusing him of forgery, embezzlement, and other fraud-related offenses, leading him to become involved in the Squid Games. He assisted Gi-hun and others in his alliance, particularly befriending Ali Abdul.

Sang-woo's main trait is his intelligence. He is an extremely bright person and is able to quickly discover solutions to problems even in extremely stressful and life-threatening situations, demonstrated when he saved his team during the game Tug of War . [4] [5] Sang-woo relies more on logic than emotion to make his decisions. He also has a strong determination to achieve his goals. However, this also makes him willing to resort to questionable means to ensure his success. Sang-woo is not easily fooled and is capable of manipulating people, a trait he employs to his advantage during the marbles game of the 33rd Squid Game . Sang-woo is determined to win the competition, as he sees it as his last chance to solve his financial problems, and is well aware that he will have to put in a lot of effort to win.

Ali Abdul (Korean: 알리 압둘 Alli Abdul , Urdu: علی عبدل Ali Abdil), also known as Player 199, was a contestant on the 33rd Squid Game. [3][4] An immigrant from Pakistan, he has a young wife and a one-year-old son, whom he struggled to support after his employer stopped paying him six months prior to Ali's participation in the game.

Ali entered the Squid Game to help his family financially after the Factory Owner refused to pay him for months. During Red Light, Green Light , Ali saves Seong Gi-hun's life and befriends him. After the first round, he confronts his boss due to the fact that he has been denied his pay for six months. This results in a bloody accident where his boss's hand is injured by a rolling machine, and Ali ends up taking the envelope of cash from his boss.

Ali is a man of slightly below average height, with dark skin and curly black hair. He has brown eyes and a stubble of beard. He is missing two fingers on his left hand, due to a previous work accident. He is shown to have immense strength, as he lifted Gi-hun by his jacket, who was physically larger than Ali himself, saving him from being eliminated in Red Light, Green Light using his injured hand, and being able to carry a steel beam during the blackout.
