In the case of the Faith of the Seven, a septon presides over the ceremony, which involves prayers, vows, and songs, and usually takes place in a sept. The bride wears a maiden's cloak in the colors of her House (if she is a noblewoman). In Westeros, the newlywed couple's bedding ceremony takes place during the banquet. The bride is escorted to bed, usually by the men present, who will remove the bride's clothing, often while making rude and inappropriate jokes. The women present at the ceremony do the same with the groom. Typically, once the bride and groom are in the bedchamber, they are left alone, although guests may stand outside, shouting "suggestions" from the other side of the door. However, in some cases, witnesses may also be present during the bedding ceremony, although the extent to which this function extends is not known.

Women, especially those of nobility, are expected to marry as virgins (called maidens), of course, on their first marriage. At some weddings, lines are displayed to show blood, proving that the bride's virginity was taken on the wedding night. However, as it is known that horse riding can break a woman's hymen, few families insist on physical proof of virginity.

Although it is quite rare for a wedding to occur before the bride has blossomed, it can happen sometimes. However, it is considered wicked to bed a bride who is so young. Even so, it is considered bad luck for the marriage if the man sleeps apart from his bride on the wedding night.
