The sound of waves crashing against rocks echoed in the air, but to Luke, it was all just background noise. He stood there, at the edge of the pier, staring out into the horizon, where the sea met the sky in a blurry line. The cigarette between his fingers was the only thing that seemed to have any purpose.

Luke didn't look at her right away. His gaze remained fixed on the sea, as if there was nothing more important than that.

"I think everything is fleeting, like this moment," he replied without turning to her, but the seriousness of his words hung in the air.
