Wally West was the "clown" of the team. A hyperactive 15-year-old speedster, he was always quick to joke and lightly comment on any situation the team found themselves in. Often extremely impatient and impulsive, Wally had a penchant for recklessness, to the point of jumping into situations without first planning, a trait that often left him in mortal danger.

Wally was commonly making innuendos and flirtatious remarks toward any attractive woman in his vicinity, regardless of age. But his attention was first and foremost directed to Miss Martian.

Despite his goofy nature, Wally was also a scientific genius, able to use his knowledge to recognize high-density polyurethane foam when he used it against Brick, as well as analyze a complex chemical combination of the Blockbuster formula and Kobra's venom. His firm belief in science was so absolute that he rejected the possibility of magic, instead accepting it and explaining certain events with "advanced science".

This may be due to the fact that an enemy of the Flash named Abra Kadabra used advanced technology to simulate magic. Aqualad claimed that Wally used his understanding of science to control what he could not comprehend. After becoming a temporary human host for Nabu and transforming into Doctor Doom, Kid Flash had a change of heart. However, he was still unwilling to admit the existence of magic.

Five years later, Wally's personality remained relatively the same as before, although he had matured somewhat. He no longer made jokes like he used to, and took everything more seriously. He was adamant about quitting the superhero life.

When the team was formed, Wally was 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. He had spiky red hair, freckles, and green eyes. He was thin and slightly muscular.

His costume was yellow with red pants, red gloves, and yellow shoes with a red lightning bolt inside a white circle. After the creation of the team, his costume was updated and slightly modified, adding shoulder pads and body protectors due to his habit of running like a human cannonball. Additionally, his new costume was integrated with technology; by pressing the lightning bolt emblem on his costume, Wally could change the color of the uniform into a black and gray variation that is more suitable for night missions. He also wore red goggles to protect his eyes, though they also provided him with the added advantage of allowing him to perceive different spectrums of light.

Wally discovered that his uncle Barry Allen was the Flash. Being the Flash's biggest fan, he begged his hero to become his sidekick. Barry refused, but that didn't stop Wally from replicating the experiment that gave Barry his powers in his family's garage. He blew up the garage and ended up in the hospital. Barry felt guilty for leaving the notes accessible that Wally could work on.

After he was released from the hospital, Wally manifested the powers he desired. Reluctantly, Barry agreed to let him become Kid Flash, but only if Wally did exactly as he said. He became a superhero in 2008.

Kid Flash eagerly awaited becoming a member of the Justice League, alongside Speedy, Aqualad, and Robin. However, when it became clear that this was not happening, he, Aqualad, and Robin went to investigate Cadmus Labs. There, they discovered the Genomorph Project and Superboy, whom they freed. The four young men stood up to their mentors and declared that they were ready to prove themselves as heroes. While Batman considered their argument, Kid Flash took Superboy with him. Together, they confronted the Terror Twins at the Central City Mall. They formed a covert operations team and were given their own headquarters at Mount Justice, and were introduced to Miss Martian.

The next day, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Robin set out on an unofficial mission to protect Selena Gonzalez from the League of Shadows, but despite their best efforts, Gonzalez was still missing.

Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Robin asked Speedy to join the team, but were rebuffed. The team began to grow restless with the lack of missions, but tried to stay and get to know each other better. They fought Mister Twister, eventually defeating him, which renewed faith in the team. The team later went on a camping trip where they shared stories of how they became heroes.

The team's first official mission was to investigate the shutdown of Venom production in Santa Prisca. Kid Flash and the rest of the team eventually agreed that Aqualad was the natural leader. The team was then sent to stop a plutonium theft. They defeated Psycho-Pirate and Atomic Skull, capturing the former.

-Superhuman speed: Because of the discreet way in which Wally created the original Flash's accident, Kid Flash was considerably slower than his mentor, at speeds approaching the speed of sound. He also lacked more advanced techniques, such as vibrating his molecules through solid objects, and needed to speed up and slow down instead of starting and stopping on the spot. He used himself as a weapon, where he cannonballed his opponents.

-Accelerated Healing: Wally heals faster than the average human.

-Superhuman endurance: Kid Flash was very resilient against pain. Despite his costume having padding, he still withstood a beating when he was hit with a violent kick.

-Superhuman Reflexes: Wally's reflexes were enhanced by his speed. He could dodge and react to attacks easily. He could not, however, perform complex tasks at high speed.

-Gymnastics: Wally appeared to be able to use basic gymnastic skills, including somersaults and front handsprings, also at high speed.

-High intellect: Wally was a science prodigy with a naturally high IQ.

-Multilingualism: Kid Flash could speak English and French and some Latin words in high school.

Hyper-Accelerated Metabolism: Wally's metabolism works many times faster than normal, so he always takes in large quantities of food to maintain his energy. Whether or not it tasted good was not a primary concern, as he had eaten a batch of Miss Martian's burnt cookies with no ill effects. For emergency situations where he had to go without contact with food for more than 24 hours, Wally kept food in a hidden compartment in his right glove.
