As a child, he lived alone with his drunken and abusive father, Kokatsu, until he was bought by Jigen, the leader of Kara. When he was first brought to Kara, Jigen took Kawaki to Amado's laboratory. Kawaki was one of fifteen Ōtsutsuki vessel candidates who were placed in artificial wombs connected by tubes to vials of liquid, through which Jigen attempted to transfer his Kāma to them. After years he eventually managed to escape from Kara and be adopted by the Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki, or so he thought.
