Stanford "Ford" Philbrick Pines (born June 15, approximately 15 minutes before Stan Pines), also known as the Author, or simply Uncle Ford, is one of the main characters in the Gravity Falls television series, and a paranormal investigator who came to Gravity Falls, Oregon to investigate the massive concentration of supernatural activity in and around the town. After spending years cataloging his research into a series of journals, he disappeared into an alternate dimension. Stanford's writings are the only evidence of his existence.

Ford's identity and whereabouts were a major mystery and plot point in Gravity Falls until midway through the second season, when it was revealed that he was the long-lost twin brother of Stan Pines, who disappeared after a fight with his brother that saw Ford accidentally trip into a portal across the universe.

Stanford Pines represents the six-fingered hand on the Zodiac (or Bill's wheel).

As Stan's twin, Ford looks very similar to his brother. However, there are a few notable differences:

Unlike Stan, Ford's hair is dark gray with horizontal gray streaks at the temples and unusually long sideburns. Ford has a dimple on his chin and a permanent stubble. His nose is visually smoother than Stan's, without any bumps. Stanford has a congenital developmental anomaly - six fingers on each hand. Ford has a much more toned physique than his brother. When Stanford Pines first emerges from the portal, he is wearing a large black coat with many pockets and what appears to be a gun in his back pocket. Underneath the coat, Grunkle Ford wears a black shirt and pants. He also wears bulky black boots, a brown belt hanging off his shoulder, a tattered cape, and a gray scarf.

Once Ford settled into his home dimension, he began wearing a beige coat, a red collared sweater with a black belt slung across his chest, black pants, and large brown boots covered in dirt. The left lens of his glasses was cracked, but he showed no inclination to change his glasses throughout the series.

Ford is an intellectual, who is seen by others as an introvert and a nerd who enjoys mind games such as Dungeons, Dungeons, and More Dungeons. Despite his intelligence, Stanford is far behind in terms of the new age when it comes to his home dimension, having been absent from it for thirty years. He has no idea about modern technology or customs, believing that floppy disks are still in use, and cared very little about why Mabel shouldn't have a crossbow, believing that it was safe for children to have guns. Before he was sucked into the portal, Stanford was quite paranoid, having a hard time trusting people due to Bill's deception.

Ford is very serious when it comes to investigating mysterious phenomena. He genuinely enjoys his research, even in the face of danger. Years of researching anomalies both in his world and beyond have made Ford a strong and courageous man who is willing to face danger head-on to keep the world safe. However, years of researching the unusual have left Ford unused to being surprised by things like the existence of aliens.
