Appearance

Tooru is a slender teenager with dark-skinned skin and dark-green hair cut into a bob. His eyes are green; his kakugan is located on the right side and is constantly in an active state. To hide it, Mutsuki wears a medical eye patch, just like Kaneki did. Like other investigators, Tooru usually wears the CCG uniform, which consists of a suit and tie, over which he wears a white coat. Under his clothes, there is a long scar on his chest, running diagonally from left to right. Mutsuki also wears a chest brace, which is secured with a pair of clasps.

In his youth, Tooru's hair was much longer and styled in a more fashionable style. His eyes were much darker, which contrasts with their shade in his older years.

After being captured by Torso, Tooru's hair turns grey due to the stress he experienced.

Personality

Toru is shown to be a kind and soft-hearted girl who plays the role of a young man in society and is characterized by modesty and self-doubt. Suffering from anemia, Mutsuki feels rejected when in contact with blood. Due to her anxiety, she constantly faces disappointment in herself as an investigator, causing her to feel superfluous in the CCG. She is upset by her own weakness, which causes irritation among her comrades. Outside of work, Toru enjoys reading books and is often alone with Sasaki, helping to summarize the accumulated information. Mutsuki is also shown to be a reliable and hardworking investigator who follows orders without complaint, unlike the rest of the Qs Squad. Despite her issues with her own confidence, she shows a strong desire to help others and is willing to put herself in danger without hesitation to protect innocent people.

Later, a flashback reveals the truth about Mutsuki's biological gender. Unable to accept that she is a girl, Tooru begins to live and act like a boy, referring to herself with strong masculine pronouns ("ore", for example), even when it sounds informal or inappropriate. This is in stark contrast to her gentle personality and deep respect for those around her. She has particular respect for Sasaki and Dr. Shiba. In addition, Mutsuki is a close confidant of her mentor, always comforting him when he is downhearted. This further demonstrates the great favor and admiration she has for Investigator First Class Sasaki Haise.

Interesting facts

Tooru's personality is very similar to Kaneki's personality before he was tortured by Yamori. Tooru's RC level is 655, which is the lowest among the Quinx Squad. Mutsuki doesn't like meat. In contrast to his gentle personality, Tooru uses the personal pronoun "ore" to refer to himself, which is usually used by rude and aggressive men. Tooru's past reveals him to be transgender, as she is biologically female but identifies as male. She has been living as a boy since she entered CCG Academy - it is unknown what measures were taken to fulfill her request.

Powers and abilities Combat training

Tooru received basic combat training and training in investigation processes at the CCG Academy. However, at first, due to her lack of confidence and inexperience, she does not show outstanding abilities and skills; most often, fear gets the better of her. Later, Mutsuki begins to study under Juzo Suzuya, adopting his skills and becoming a worthy close- and mid-range fighter.

Knife Mastery: Mutsuki is trained in dual-wielding techniques. As the storyline progresses, her knife skills increase, largely due to Juzo Suzuya. Through extensive training and instruction from Suzuya, Mutsuki has learned to throw quinque knives at opponents with great precision, inflicting head wounds and effectively incapacitating them at medium and long range.
