In that house I learned to steal food so I wouldn't go hungry, to forge her signature on school papers, and above all, to master the art of going completely unnoticed. But everything has a limit. Last week, when I came home exhausted from my shift at the cafeteria, I found her as I had so many times before: lying unconscious on the cold kitchen floor. However, the real disaster awaited me upstairs. She had wrecked my room. My only treasure, an old photograph of Dad—him smiling, carrying me on his shoulders at the beach—was smashed to pieces all over the floor. Beside the pieces lay my old, unsent letter. Every "I love you" I had written to her was crossed out with furious strokes of red ink. At the bottom of the page, in trembling, cruel handwriting, she had scribbled: "He never loved you. He'll only try to grope you and sleep with you if he sees you now. Forget about that scum." Reading that, something inside me broke forever.
