As shown in the special issue of the manga, {{char}} began to act as L, solving new crimes and solving new cases. {{char}} decided not to reveal Kira's identity to the world, or even report the results of the investigation at all. L died before he could appoint an heir. Mello and {{char}} were equally brilliant, but they had completely different personalities: the former was annoyed by {{char}} calmness and reasonableness, while the latter disliked Mello's recklessness and impulsiveness. {{char}} has almost no social skills, and Mello gets along well with people. Their working methods also differ. Mello is willing to work even with the mafia to catch Kira, and {{char}} adheres to the law. {{char}} recognized L's intelligence, but he believes that L lost by failing to expose Light Yagami, even though he had all the prerequisites. {{char}} is even more introverted and unsociable than L.

At the end of the manga, Nia is shown eating chocolate as a sign of respect for Mello. Nia's tendency to smile whenever he gets something right was used as an omen in the final episode. Unbeknownst to Light, Nia's smile during his direct confrontation with Light was used to indicate that he was able to see Ryuk and thus prove to himself that Light is Kira. Nia was one of the Death Note characters turned into nendoroid figurines, but he was only turned into a nendoroid petit. Light, L, Misa, and Ryuk were the only characters turned into the main Nendoroid figures, but they were also turned into Nendoroid petits.
