Etymology

Daniel: From the Hebrew name Χ“ΦΈΦΌΧ Φ΄Χ™Φ΅ΦΌΧΧœ (Daniyyel) meaning "God is my judge". Daniel was a Hebrew prophet whose story is told in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. He lived during the Jewish captivity in Babylon, where he served in the king's court, gaining prominence by interpreting the king's dreams. The book also presents Daniel's four visions of the end of the world. Due to the popularity of the biblical character, the name came into use in England during the Middle Ages. Although it became rare by the 15th century, it was revived after the Protestant Reformation. Famous bearers of this name include the English author Daniel Defoe (1660–1731), the Swiss mathematician Daniel Bernoulli (1700–1782), and the American pioneer Daniel Boone (1734–1820).

Grigori: has no significance, except that it is mentioned that a group was named after him, called 'The Watchers', who studied Daniel and angels who had relationships with mortal women.

Past

Daniel was the sixth archangel in heaven, known as the angel of lost souls.

Daniel found Lucinda crying in the meadow of Heaven and asked her what was wrong. Daniel had never seen one cry before, and seeing her full of emotions was something new to him. Lucinda explained everything that had happened between her and Lucifer, explaining what love was. He told her that the love Lucifer had given her did not seem pretty at all, and that if she were his, if he had given her any love, he would never eclipse her with his desires as Lucifer had done. Then, Lucinda and Daniel kissed - although Lucinda had led him through it. Daniel had never felt love before, but after their kiss, he fell in love with Lucinda.

Some time after the kiss, Daniel was forced to choose between Heaven or Hell. But instead of choosing between the two, Daniel called the war between the two foolish and that he chose love, he chose Lucinda. Lucinda, the second Archangel at the time, also sided with Daniel, taking his hand as they declared their love for each other. Angering both the Throne and Lucifer, a curse was placed on the two so that they would never truly be together, that Lucinda would die before reaching adulthood and the moment she remembered the choice they made. However, a cleavage of Daniel - his present self from 2009 - emerged before the fall and asked for a loophole, thus granted by the Throne and upsetting Lucifer and so the Fall happened.

Daniel has endured seven thousand years of reincarnation and death from Lucinda to life in Fallen, each with their own million lives, different aliases and such.

It is briefly mentioned in Angels in The Dark that Daniel's friend Shem was the only angel who understood his reasoning for loving Lucinda and choosing her.

Fallen

When Luce 'first' meets Daniel in 2009, he tells her that he wants nothing to do with her, flipping her off. As Luce begins to learn more about Daniel, his actions quickly change, becoming very protective of Luce and seeming like he has known her for a long time.

Daniel appears to be friends with Arriane Alter, Roland Sparks, and Gabbe. Throughout the book, he appears to grow closer and more protective of her as they progress, trying to keep her away from Cam as best he can, failing every now and then when Cam holds her back. Daniel appears to keep his distance from Lucinda, but often finds it difficult. He takes her to his "secret place" several times, where they swim and almost kiss once. When the library fire happens, Daniel apparently saves her from the fire. He also brings her peonies when she is in the hospital. Cam and Daniel later fight over Luce in the library, it is unknown if this is out of jealousy or being protective of Lucinda.

When Daniel finds out that Cam took Luce off campus to go to a bar, he goes to her and takes her to a beach, where he kisses Luce and is shocked when she does not die, as that is what happens when he kisses Luce's past selves. She is very confused as Daniel mumbles about "I thought I knew the rules." and "Why is this happening?" and "Something must have changed."

+

After returning to Sword & Cross, Daniel saves Luce from Cam in the cemetery, leaving Cam to be beaten by Gabbe. He takes her to a field where there is a peach tree and Daniel tells her the story of his reincarnations and how he has known her for thousands of years and that he is immortal. Lucinda then leaves him alone, but later finds him again in the cemetery and tells him that she knows he is an angel. Daniel is very shocked, but does not deny her, as she was right. Daniel then tells Luce to leave with Sophia and Penn while he fights Cam and his army of Announcers.

When the battle is 'over', he finds Penn's body at the bottom of the Chapel steps and then goes to Luce, finding her pinned under a knife that was drawn by Sophia Bliss. For the first time there, Daniel shows his wings to Lucinda for the first time. Luce tells him about Penn's death and he assures her that he will bury her.

After everything calms down, Luce shows Daniel where she wants him to bury Penn and then takes her to the lake, where they spend their last minutes together stealing kisses and swimming.

At the end of Fallen, Cam and Daniel call an eighteen-day truce.

passion

In Passion, Daniel finds himself chasing Lucinda throughout her past lives, but he is always late. He has encountered his past self many times, receiving advice and encouragement to find Luce. At one point, by accident, he splits his soul and Miles cuts him off.

Near the end of the novel, Daniel realizes that he is the one who has put a loophole in the curse, and although he has been tricked by a Cherub, Daniel goes to the pastβ€”to when he is forced to decide between Good or Evilβ€”and asks the Throne for a loophole. The Throne grants his wish, though Lucifer objects. In the end, Daniel and Luce are reunited. However, Daniel quickly discovers that Lucinda has been tricked by Lucifer and that Lucifer plans to erase all of time. This prompts the angels to prevent the Fall from occurring again and the Rapture beings.

Personality

Daniel's character seems to be extremely enigmatic throughout the first Fallen book, and as soon as Luce sets eyes on him, she is intrigued. Mysterious and aloof, going from hot to cold in seconds, Daniel Grigori is unlike anyone Luce has ever met before. But over the course of the book series, Daniel learns to be caring and protective, very passionate, and with a strong love for the arts. Daniel, despite being known in the books as a "hotshot", is clearly not a spotlight type of guy and has a very easy-going and sweet personality. He often finds himself doing the unspeakable for Lucinda, as she showed him the world before her curse was cast. Daniel also proves his love for Lucinda in each life, allowing her to fall in love with him instead of taking advantage of the curse knowing she would fall in love with him anyway.

However, it is noted that there are times when Daniel suffers from depression and often loneliness, particularly when Lucinda has already passed away and Daniel is waiting. This is shown frequently in Passion and Angels in the Dark

Appearance

Daniel is well built and has stunning facial features. He has blond hair and gray eyes with violet flecks, but they often turn completely violet when he is around Lucinda or even senses her presence. Daniel also describes his eyes changing color when Lucinda might need him a little more than usual without knowing it. Daniel has a square jaw; full lips; and a straight nose. Daniel has also maintained many different hair colors and darker tans throughout Lucinda's life, but the most common was a golden tan and his hair was blonde.
