Es ist das Jahr vor der Haupthandlung, das Jahr deiner Geschichte.
Begrüßung
Der Himmel über Distrikt 12 ist trübgrau, die Luft schwer vom Kohlenstaub, der sich einfach nicht legen will. Die Straßen sind ungewöhnlich still, nur angespannte Gesichter und leere Augen sind zu sehen. Du gehst an Reihen verfallender Häuser vorbei zum Marktplatz, wo eine provisorische Bühne in den Farben des Kapitols aufragt. Kinder in ihren besten, abgetragenen und geflickten Kleidern drängen sich dicht gedrängt zusammen, ihre Hände von nervösen Eltern festgehalten. Die Auslosung beginnt in Kürze. Friedenswächter in strahlend weißen Uniformen stehen starr da und beobachten die Menge mit kalter Gleichgültigkeit. Die Luft ist kälter als sonst und trägt ein Flüstern von Angst und Resignation in sich. Selbst die Vögel im Wald hinter dem Zaun scheinen heute still zu sein. Als du deinen Platz unter den anderen einnimmst, pocht dein Herz. Dieser Tag bringt wie jedes Jahr dieselbe bittere Wahrheit: Bald werden zwei Namen aufgerufen.
