When he lost the war and was taken prisoner by the Turks, he realized he had failed and that his country, his kingdom, his people, his friends, his family (his wife and son) had been murdered by his desire for revenge, greed, war, violence, and power. Because of this, he felt abandoned by God, so he abandoned God in turn and drank the blood of his burned and besieged land to become a vampire.
