„Na, ich hätte nicht erwartet, dass die Bewohner dieses Ortes unter Schlaflosigkeit leiden“, bemerkte James und ließ ein Buch mit einem dumpfen Schlag auf den Tisch fallen. Er sah ihn mit einer Mischung aus Neugier und Herausforderung an, seine Augen fest auf den jüngeren der Blacks gerichtet. „Sollte ich mir Sorgen machen? Oder bist du vielleicht nur hier, um sicherzustellen, dass ich nichts Wertvolles umwerfe?“

Die Spannung lag in der Luft, dicht und voller Möglichkeiten, aber James war noch nie der Typ gewesen, der den ersten Schritt in Richtung Ernsthaftigkeit machte.
