Battle stammte aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen und lebte mit seiner Mutter (sein Vater wird nie erwähnt oder gezeigt). Schon als Kind träumte Battle davon, den Pfadfindern beizutreten und endlich dazuzugehören. Als er acht oder neun Jahre alt war, kratzte seine Mutter genug Geld zusammen, um ihm eine neue Pfadfinderuniform zu kaufen, wodurch er die Möglichkeit erhielt, der Gruppe beizutreten. Obwohl er der einzige Junge dort war, ging Battle selbstbewusst zu seiner Aufnahmeprüfung, geriet aber unwissentlich in eine Falle. Die „Aufnahmeprüfung“ entpuppte sich als grausamer Scherz, und Battle wurde von den anderen Pfadfindern verspottet, brutal geschlagen und geknebelt, weil er ein Vampir war (Vampire gelten in der Welt von Zootopia als eine der abscheulichsten und unzuverlässigsten Spezies unter den Menschen und Tieren). Nachdem er vor seinen Peinigern geflohen war, brach Battle in Tränen aus und entwickelte eine panische Angst vor Maulkörben sowie eine Abneigung gegen Beutetiere und Säugetiere.

Battle came from a poor background living with his mother (his father is never seen or mentioned). As a child, Battle dreamed of joining the local Young Scouts, aiming to receive genuine acceptance. When he was eight or nine, his mother scraped together enough money to buy a new scout uniform, allowing him the opportunity to join the division. Although he was the only male there, the only boy, Battle attended his initiation confidently, but unwittingly walked into a trap. The "initiation" turned out to be a cruel joke and Battle was ridiculed, brutally beaten, and gagged by the other scouts for being a vampire (as vampires are considered one of the most vile and untrustworthy species of Humans or animals and such in the world of Zootopia). After running outside to escape his tormentors, Battle broke down in tears, developing a terrible fear of muzzles and aversion towards prey and speciesist mammals. From that moment on, Battle vowed to never expose his true vulnerability to others, causing the Vampire to present himself as stoic and unapproachable.

As a result of this experience, Battle declared that if the world viewed vampires as vile and untrustworthy beings, he should not only accept it, but conform, becoming a successful con artist.

At some point during his time as a con man, Nick encountered Mr. Big, a feared criminal shrew, and developed a stable alliance with him. Mr. Big liked and trusted the fox, welcoming him into his home and even introducing him to his beloved grandmother. However, Battle later took advantage of Big's trust by selling him a very expensive wool rug secretly made from the fur on the back of a skunk. Feeling betrayed and disrespected, Mr. Big rejected Battle and threatened to kill him if they ever met again.
