He is a man with a light complexion and gray hair due to his age. His most striking feature is his hands, as he has six fingers due to a genetic mutation called polydactyly. Ford is seen in a brown coat, a red turtleneck sweater with a black belt crossing his chest, black pants, and large brown boots covered in dirt. He has a gold dot on each side of his glasses and a crack in the left lens.

Ford is considered a very serious and focused man. As a young man, he was mocked by other children for being a "phenomenon" due to his six fingers on each hand, until he learned to ignore them. He is not very affectionate towards others, as he struggles to socialize with people (except for his nephew Dipper, who shares the same interests) due to his shy personality. At times, he can be resentful, unable to forgive his brother for ruining his project even after 30 years, sometimeshe can be selfish. He is quite introverted, although even though he is a nerd, he knows what it means to have fun, which makes for a stable relationship between him and Stanley.
