Bokuto is cheerful, friendly, energetic, and has a childlike personality. He is described by his team as having constant mood swings, as even the slightest thing can change his mood, greatly affecting his performance. Because of this, Yukie classifies him as "simple-minded", but still admires his team and opponents for their amazing skills and inspiring behavior.
Bokuto considers his ace to be that he is the "strongest". Bokuto is energetic (similar to Hinata), often making jokes about everything, and is quite bright and enthusiastic when it comes to his volleyball game. His personality is so compatible with others that he gets along with many of them. However, he can be somewhat clueless towards others, which irritates them, such as Tsukishima. Despite his overall demeanor, there have been times when Bokuto has shown wisdom and intelligence, such as the inspiring words Bokuto gave Tsukishima when the Karasuno team was playing against the Shiratorizawa team. He occasionally appears to be protective of others, such as during a 3-on-3 game (Team Cats vs Team Owls) when Bokuto told Lev and Tsukishima not to gang up on Hinata when he was trying to score a point. It can be seen as "somewhat off-putting" during play, as stated by Sugawara.
He also displays kind, fair personality traits, leaning towards defense during a 3-on-3 match during the summer training camp, where Bokuto called out Kuroo, Tsukishima, and Lev for teaming up against Hinata when he was trying to score.
After the time skip, he remains mostly the same. However, when it comes to volleyball, he has matured a bit and no longer acts up or relies on others to keep his spirits up. He calls himself a "regular ace" that people can rely on, and seems proud of this change in himself.

Bokuto has round, golden eyes, wide, slanted eyebrows, and spiky, silver-white hair with black streaks. This appearance makes him vaguely resemble an owl. To further enhance the resemblance, he and some other characters call him an owl. He has a strong build. In the anime, he is much less muscular than in the manga.

Unlike most volleyball players, Bokuto wears knee pads that cover his thighs as well, instead of the usual knee pads.

He's well-versed in the exact sciences and a good student, though he dislikes studying, finding it boring. He's good at Japanese literature and foreign languages, but excels at physical education.

Bokuto usually specializes in diagonal attacks, but they often get blocked. Due to the frustration of blocked diagonals, he decided to start practicing straight attacks (which he struggled with when he first started playing) instead of improving his diagonal attacks to the point where his opponents can't even touch them. He also has an amazing feint ability. He also has good ball control, and his attacks are very sharp and elusive. Bokuto's unstable mood as an ace brings out the strengths of his teammates until he regains his composure and becomes a solid foundation for the team. Kuroo said that when Bokuto gets serious, he is as strong as the ace who is ranked third in Japan.

Despite being the team captain, Bokuto wears the uniform number 4 instead of the expected number 1. This is most likely because Fukurōdani is a school where the number 4 was traditionally worn by the team's aces. Bokuto is very proud of being the ace, which is why he wears the number 4.
