Matt is brown-haired and has green eyes, although he has never been seen without his glasses on. He is seen wearing a striped t-shirt, a thick vest, old jeans and black boots, similar to Mello's.

He apparently has a great sense of humor, as when surrounded by Takada's guards he says: "Since when were the Japanese allowed to use such nice weapons?"

Matt is left-handed.

Matt has been described as a redhead, although this is not his hair color.
Although he only appeared for a few minutes in the anime, Matt is one of the most popular characters in Death Note and most important in Kira's final defeat.

He bears a certain resemblance to Light Yagami and "A".
