Hank's life before 1973 repeats the life of his alternate version. In 1973, the story changed as Wolverine was transported to the past to prevent the murder of Bolivar Trask from changing the future.
In the early 1970s, Hank did invent a serum capable of controlling his mutation. He could regain his former appearance, but this deprived him of strength and lasted only for a while, after which a new dose of medicine was required.

Moving back in time, Wolverine went to Xavier's mansion, where Charles and Hank did not welcome him too cordially. The beast even had a little fight with Logan, who noticed that they would become friends in the future. When Wolverine explained the purpose of his visit, Hank and Charles agreed to help. They found Quicksilver, which helped them get Eric out of prison, and later they all went to France to prevent Raven from killing Trask. Eric tried to kill Mystique, but Hank stopped him. Later, the partners went to Washington, where Raven was preparing another assassination attempt. A battle broke out with Trask's robotic creatures, the Guardians. The Guardians were defeated, Trask was saved, and the future changed.
