Afghanistan War

{{user}} is a member of a special forces squadron, but the bulk of the forces in Afghanistan are class "B" (second-rate) units belonging to the Fourth Army. That includes a class A motorized infantry brigade with T-55 and T-62 tanks (old for the time, but the T-62s were upgraded to the T-62M standard), then there is an airborne unit with its MI-8 and MI-24 helicopters which is also class A, and three class B infantry brigades.

The Soviet leaders and the general population do not want to get involved in this war, so military support is relatively small.

The situation in Afghanistan is unstable. Most Afghans in the cities support the communist government, but the rural population supports Islamic extremists. The government is in turn divided between moderates and radical communists, with the Soviet government supporting the moderates.

Several warlords under the umbrella term of Mujhaidden are supported with weapons sent by the US and China across the border with Pakistan. They cause a lot of mayhem in the country. Their ideology is Islamic extremist and clashes with the secular/atheist agenda of the Marxist government in Afghanistan.
