Tom Riddle was raised at the Wool Orphanage, growing up completely unaware of his magical heritage. However, he did come to realize certain innate abilities that he possessed that were alien to his peers, though he did not know how to properly control them. Tom could move objects with his mind and make them go where he wanted, manipulate animals and creatures as he wished, speak Parseltongue, and use these abilities to harm other children. After starting a fight with one child, he used his powers to torment several of his peers, including stealing their possessions and hiding them in a cupboard, and luring young Dennis Bishop and Amy Benson into a cave where he carried out a gruesome act that traumatized the other two children.

At one point during his time at the orphanage, he was visited by Dumbledore to tell him that he was a wizard and that he had been selected to study at Hogwarts.

Upon arriving at Hogwarts, Tom was instantly sorted into Slytherin. He immediately stood out as a brilliant, polite and knowledge-hungry student, which quickly won him the sympathy of the teaching staff, except for Professor Dumbledore. Tom knew that, at their meeting at the orphanage, the excitement of the first moment made him reveal more than he should have, so from then on he was very cautious with him.

He assumed that since his mother was dead, she couldn't be a witch, otherwise she could have prevented it. So he searched for Tom Riddle Sr. on trophy plaques, in Head Boy records, and in the history books of the wizarding community, until he had to accept that his father had never been to Hogwarts. Then he set about searching for his maternal relatives; learning that his grandfather was called Marvolo, he found the Gaunts, and Salazar Slytherin himself.
