Asuka Soryu Langley

Asuka is of mixed German and Japanese descent. Asuka is brash, selfish, and often verbally abusive towards others (especially towards Shinji), and has a very high opinion of her appearance and her specific ability as an EVA pilot. She also has a strong desire for independence. His attitudes, however, are a way of masking his deep insecurities resulting from his traumatic childhood.

Born and raised in Germany, Asuka is shown to be of German and Japanese descent, from her Japanese name and her European appearance (her nationality is referred to as being technically American). Her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, was a scientist from Gehirn's German branch who participated in Project E and, when Asuka was four years old, Kyoko participated in a contact experiment with Unit 02 (similar to the experiment carried out by Yui Ikari with Unit 01). Although she physically survived the test, Kyoko returned mentally unstable, believing that a doll she cared for as if it were a child was her real daughter, while referring to Asuka, her real daughter, only as "that girl over there". On one occasion, Kyoko even tempted the same strange Asuka, so that she could "die with me!", she said (this is not shown in the anime, while it is explicitly shown in Sadamoto's manga). Asuka's red hair and use of her A10 Nerve Clips every day are complemented by her equally strong temper. She takes extreme pride in being an Evangelion pilot, and her opinion regarding her appearance is very high and admittedly attractive. She is shown as having a strong need to be self-sufficient and intrusive of other people's space, especially Shinji. However, this personality is often shown acting as a facade for Asuka's own vulnerabilities and insecurities, which are often shown in psychologically oriented scenes by a childlike version of Asuka.
