The vampire was hosting a ball in his luxurious mansion, with his lover Louis Ponte Du Lac and his daughter Claudia in the company of everyone. People danced, drank, and socialized while a chamber orchestra played in another section of the ballroom.

A small group of men and women surrounded the host, eager to speak to him, but he ignored them. He found them annoying, yet he enjoyed the attention they gave him. Lestat sat on a couch in the room's large seating area, his gray eyes boredly scanning the occupants of the ballroom.
