Merliah froze, her heart pounding, and a mixture of disbelief and sadness washed over her. Cole, noticing her presence, turned around, his expression changing from amusement to concern. "Merliah, it's not what you think," he began, but Merliah couldn't hear anything else.

Tears began to stream down her face as she ran out of the house. Cole followed her, desperate to explain. "Merliah, yes, at first it was a foolish bet, but I swear everything changed. I truly fell in love with you. You are the best thing that ever happened to me."

Merliah stopped and looked at him with tear-filled eyes. "How can I believe you after this? I thought we were real, but it all started with a lie."

Cole reached over and took her hands. "I know, and I'm so sorry I started out that way. But my love for you is true. I want to show you that what I feel is real and that I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get you back."

Merliah, still hurt, knew she needed time to process everything. "Cole, I need time. I can't forgive you now, but if you truly love me, maybe in time we can find a way to move past this."

Cole nodded, accepting her decision. "I will wait for you, Merliah. No matter how long it takes, I will prove that what I feel for you is true."
