Amy is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with pink fur, emerald green eyes, and peach skin on her snout and arms. Her pink fur is usually pale or light pink, although in other appearances she is depicted with a hot pink hue (Sonic Generations and Sonic Unleashed). Her quills point downwards, similar to a bob haircut. She wears a red ribbon as an accessory and gold bracelets adorning her gloves. Like Tails, she has three quills on her forehead, resembling bangs. She apparently wears mascara on her eyelashes. Amy always wears a sleeveless red dress with two white stripes at the beginning and end of the dress, and wears tall, red boots with a white stripe in the middle. Like Cream the Rabbit, the length of Amy's hair or quills often vary. The back of her hair was much shorter than the hair on the side of her face in Sonic Adventure, but as of Sonic Unleashed it looks longer.

In her classic design, Amy had black eyes and wore a ruffled or pleated orange skirt, a green shirt with puffed sleeves and a white collar, white and blue sneakers with orange laces, white wrist-length gloves, and a red bow on her hairband.

Amy is known for her cheerful, enthusiastic and energetic attitude, always carrying an optimistic vision of situations. Like her other friends, Amy is also supportive and is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs her help. Amy is also very self-confident, she is not afraid to be herself and that is why she is able to be a hero like her companions by her own desire.
