He is charismatic and intelligent, with a nonchalant attitude. He cares little for others and mostly acts in his own best interest. However, to Xie Lian he is very gentle, treating him with the utmost care and respect and offering him anything he desires. After the two get married, he has been shown to be a passionate lover and dislikes being away from Xie Lian.

He is confident in his abilities, though rightfully so as he is one of the most powerful beings. Despite this, he does have a more vulnerable side. He is deeply insecure about his feelings and feels he is unworthy of Xie Lian's love, but once he learns they are reciprocated, he is immensely joyful.

Despite being a ghost king, he is not outright evil, seemingly neutral as he neither undertakes altruistic actions nor engages in evil or barbaric acts. He seems to have a love of collecting rare treasures, having a large collection of antiques and priceless artifacts and weapons, some of which are thousands of years old. Ironically, he treats them rather poorly. He does not care when they are destroyed and has been shown to abuse or misuse them himself on occasion.

As a Supreme, Hua Cheng possesses an extremely powerful shape-shifting ability not even gods can see through. It's said that no one has ever seen his true form because he transformed so often.

The first time he met Xie Lian after the third ascension, his appearance was about sixteen to seventeen, noted to be good-looking in a boyish, devilish way with eyes bright as the stars. He wore casual, maple-red clothes of high quality and had a loose, carefree ponytail.

In his true form, Hua Cheng is a handsome youth of eighteen to nineteen years. The childish aura of his younger form is one of calmness in true form, although there is still a wild playfulness to him. He has skin as white as snow and wears maple-red clothes along with exquisite, silver vambraces. Hua Cheng is also taller than Xie Lian, he has to stretch his neck in order to see him.

He has a deep, gentle voice that is pleasant to the ears in his true form.

Due to deeply loving Xie Lian since he was very young, he despises everyone who has wronged Xie Lian in his eyes. He does not care about the objective circumstances and is firm in his distaste for anyone who left or stood against Xie Lian at one point.

During his early days, Hua Cheng was nicknamed Hong Hong-er by his mother after the birth defect that caused his right eye to be red. He is always said to have worn dirty and messy bandages around his face covering everything except his mouth and left eye.

Hong'er was born under the Star of Solitude which caused his fate to be turbulent and easily influenced into one of two extremes. At the same time as his birth, White No-Face dispersed his built-up misfortune in the Kiln. This misfortune then reached Hong'er and due to the fragile nature of his fate, he was filled with extreme misfortune.

It was not clear how he lived before meeting Xie Lian, but the Head Priest of Xianle explained that according to his luck his parents would either have died when he was young or abandoned him out of disgust; he would have faced all forms of abuse, inflict misfortune and death to all who came into contact with him, and would die before the age of 18. By his own admittance, his mother died before he was ten years old. He stated that he got kicked out of his own home, probably from his still living father.

Like the Head Priest had predicted, Hong Hong-er was constantly bullied not only by kids his age but also by adults on the streets. From birth on he was hated by all and often suffered deathly injuries.

Xie Lian, Mu Qing and Feng Xin coincidentally came across Qi Rong on their way to meet Mu Qing's mother and saved Hong'er.Xie Lian rushed to the royal infirmary and the medics were shocked that despite his five broken ribs, one broken leg and various injuries, the boy was conscious and can converse while sitting up.

After the situation calmed, Xie Lian offered to take Hong'er home, but Hong'er explained that there was a fight in his home and he was kicked out, he walked a long time and had nowhere to go. Since they can't leave him in the palace where Qi Rong could get to him again, Xie Lian took him to Taicang Mountain.

Three years after the crown prince's first ascension, Hong'er regularly took care of and lived in an inconspicuous Crown Prince shrine. The god statue was supposed to hold a clay flower but it broke off, so Hong'er would tuck in a fresh white flower every day.[11] As he was often thrown out of his home, Hong'er would oftentimes stay in the small Crown Prince shrine without anything to eat.

A group of kids came to taunt him, mocking him for being thrown out of his home and that his 'mom' would beat him again if he slept in the shrine. Hong'er became angry, shouting that 'that woman' is not his mother and began beating up the kids. He was quickly overwhelmed and Xie Lian stepped in, breaking the fight with a wave of spiritual energy.

During the 800 years between his death and Xie Lian's third ascension, Hua Cheng scoured the land to look for Xie Lian while establishing his power. He then created the Ghost City and became its ruler.

One of Hua Cheng's butterflies flies by the teahouse that Xie Lian visits. The latter notices it and the butterfly even stops on his finger, though it quickly flies away again when Nan Feng and Fu Yao arrive.

Hua Cheng shows up in his true form after Xie Lian is left alone inside the sedan. He lifts the curtain and gives his hand to him. Xie Lian takes it and gets out, Hua Cheng then leads him to a Ming Guang temple while he holds an umbrella above them to be shielded from the pouring rain. Xie Lian was about to apprehend him with Ruoye but he shatters into silver butterflies.

As a ghost, Hua Cheng doesn't age and has no need for necessities like food or sleep. He is also unable to die unless his ashes were to be destroyed, or he left the world on his own accord.

Since he is of Devastation rank, he possesses enough power to wipe out an entire nation and throw the mortal realm into chaos.

He has an abundance of spiritual powers.

One of his most notorious powers is summoning blood rain at will. The rain doesn't appear to be harmful and behaves like ordinary rain that is coloured red.

He has decent skills in painting, shown when he painted the portrait of Xie Lian in Puqi Shrine.
