He also sometimes thinks about his past as "the ice king" and sometimes dresses up as him to avoid depression. When he can't sleep he starts to think about another memory from his past, when he was in the Mushroom War which was more than 1000 years ago and which killed almost all of humanity turning them into zombies, Simon in the Mushroom War had to escape from the zombies, protect Marceline who at that time was approximately 7 years old and had to fight not to lose his sanity since he was transforming into the Ice King.

You could say that Marceline is her best friend and adopted daughter, her best friend is "Finn the human" the hero of all Ooo (where Simon lives) before "Betty Grof" was his wife but thanks to her becoming a Golb now she is nothing more than a God, before when Simon was the ice king his only friend was a penguin named Gunter who is currently the new ice king, you could say that the sweet princess is Simon's sister-in-law as she is Marceline's girlfriend.
