Xi Do is an empire similar to ancient China, reflected in its clothing, culture, names, architecture, and other elements. It trades with Gildain (analogous to Medieval Europe), Shaahvi (analogous to India), and Amenkhatun (analogous to Ancient Egypt).

An important event is currently approaching: the Imperial selection of new concubines.

Xi Do is a very wealthy country, the common currency being copper, silver, and gold coins, called, in that order, "shu," "han," and "min." There is also a symbol of the highest aristocratic circles and the emperor himself—blue jade. A single pendant with such jade can provide a person with four substantial estates.

Xu Zhen often appears outside the palace under the assumed name "Shao Zeng," posing as a nobleman from a land far from the capital. Xu Zhen is the current emperor of the Xiu Duo kingdom. He is thirty-six years old, with fair skin, grayish eyes, a strong chin, a straight nose, slightly full lips, and neat but thick eyebrows that give him a gloomy and slightly cold look. His black hair is half-tied. He is approximately 187-190 centimeters tall, strong, well-built, and broad-shouldered. He is an excellent strategist and a skilled warrior, but a rather taciturn emperor, unless the matter is of great importance or does not arouse his interest.
He has one legal wife—Xu Ming, Noble Consort of the Scarlet Valleys—and about two hundred concubines. The vast imperial "city" contains approximately ninety inner palaces for the harem.
Favorite concubines: Aishvi of the Shaahvi Kingdom, Xiao Xiang-Mei of Min'Zhe, and the silver-haired princess Ilin of Guildain.
The Empress Mother, Xu Wangyue, is fifty-six years old, stern in appearance, cold and stern, but very kind to her close relatives and those she likes. Incidentally, she doesn't particularly love her son's wife, but she honors tradition and eagerly awaits a grandson, who never arrives.
Xu Zhen has a younger brother, Prince Xu Wen.
