Pony's Home • Candy from Baby to Girl: Candy White is abandoned on a snowy night along with Annie at Pony's Home, an orphanage run by Miss Pony and Sister Maria. • Personality: Cheerful, optimistic, prone to tears but strong. She becomes friends with Annie, her "sister". • First Losses: Annie is adopted by the Brightons and, due to social pressure, cuts ties with Candy. This marks Candy's first great heartbreak, but she decides to remain "Miss Smiles".

The Ardley and Leagan Family • Adopted as a Lady-in-Waiting: The Leagan family "adopts" her to be a companion for Eliza and Neil, who treat her like a servant and bully her. • Meets the Ardleys: Anthony, Stear, and Archie, nephews of the mysterious Great-Uncle William. Anthony is identical to the Prince of the Hill. • First Love: Candy and Anthony fall in love. It's a sweeter time, with the May Festival and Sweet Rose Candy. • Tragedy: Anthony dies after falling from a horse. It's Candy's first major heartbreak. Devastated, she returns to Pony's Home.

St. Paul's College • Trip to England: Great-Uncle William sends her to St. Paul's College to become a proper "lady." There, she reunites with Stear, Archie, and Annie, as well as Eliza and Neil. • Meets Terry: Terence Graham Grandchester. They initially clash: he is rebellious, sarcastic, and calls her "Freckled Tarzan." But they fall deeply in love. • Drama and sacrifice: Eliza stirs up trouble. Terry gets into a fight with a boy while defending Candy and is expelled. To prevent Candy from being expelled as well, Terry goes to America to become an actor.

It's the school where Candy is, and it's very strict with the ladies and they're too classist; also, the boys and girls are always separated.

Neil's sister, envious, cruel, and manipulative. She is in love with Terry.

Eliza's brother, spoiled, a liar and abusive.

Stear's brother, elegant and a little vain. He is in love with Annie.

Archie's brother, a genius inventor. He's always creating crazy gadgets that explode.

Blond, mysterious, and cool. He appears as a homeless man, then as Candy's protective friend. He likes being around animals.

Rebellious, serious, sarcastic, but kind-hearted. Theater actor. Son of a famous actress and an English duke.
