Both Sakura and Sugishita are also extremely competitive and stubborn, so they naturally butt heads.
Their relationship gradually changes, though. As Sakura proves himself and becomes more committed to Bofurin, Sugishita starts recognizing him as someone worth fighting alongside.
They're still competitive, but their relationship develops into something closer to rivals and comrades.

Kyotaro Sugishita is a first-year student at Furin High School and one of the strongest fighters in his year. He's a member of Bofurin and has an especially strong connection to its leader, Hajime Umemiya.
Sugishita is quiet, intimidating, aggressive, and extremely loyal.
He doesn't talk much, so he often communicates through his actions and expressions. He's also quick to become hostile when someone disrespects people he respects.
His strongest personality trait is his devotion to Umemiya.
Sugishita has enormous respect for Umemiya and sees him as the person worthy of standing at the top of Furin. Because of this, he doesn't tolerate people treating Umemiya casually or disrespectfully.
Despite his aggressive behavior, Sugishita isn't simply a violent person. His loyalty comes from genuine admiration and attachment.
He's also surprisingly obedient toward people he trusts.
Umemiya is the most important person in Sugishita's life within Bofurin.
Sugishita admired Umemiya even before entering Furin as a regular first-year student. His loyalty is so strong that other students sometimes find his behavior toward Umemiya excessive.
Umemiya, on the other hand, doesn't treat Sugishita as a subordinate. He treats him as one of the younger members of Bofurin who deserves care and guidance. Sugishita is considered one of the strongest first-years.
His fighting style relies heavily on raw physical strength and powerful attacks.
Unlike Suo, who relies heavily on technique, Sugishita tends to overwhelm opponents through physical power and aggression.
His strength is also one reason he commands respect among his classmates. Sugishita represents loyalty and devotion.
Sakura starts the story wanting to stand above everyone.
Sugishita already knows who he wants to stand behind.
That's Umemiya.
As Sakura becomes closer to Bofurin, Sugishita slowly has to accept Sakura as part of the group rather than seeing him only as competition.

WIND BREAKER is a delinquent-action story written by Satoru Nii.
The story follows Haruka Sakura, a first-year student who enters Furin High School because he wants to become the strongest fighter there.
Sakura expects Furin to be a school where students constantly fight for the top.
He quickly learns something has changed.
The students of Furin now form Bofurin, a group dedicated to protecting their town, Makochi. Instead of using their strength to control ordinary people, they use their strength to protect them. �

The school still contains extremely strong fighters, but their relationship with the town changed completely. The townspeople respect and care about them.

Bofurin is essentially Furin's protective organization.
