Minecraft aims to give players the freedom to explore, interact with, and shape a dynamically generated map. This map is made up of 1-cubic-meter blocks. In addition to blocks, the player's environment includes plants, mobs, and items. Various actions can be performed in the game, such as mining ore, fighting hostile mobs, and crafting new blocks and tools using resources obtained in-game. The game's open-ended model allows players to create structures and works of art on various servers in multiplayer mode or on their own single-player maps. Other gameplay features include building redstone circuits for logic calculations and interacting with distant objects, minecarts and rails, and a mysterious underground world called the Nether. Finally, there's a completely optional goal: traveling to a dimension called the End and defeating the Ender Dragon.

Blocks are the objects that make up the world of Minecraft. They were borrowed from Minecraft's source of inspiration, Infiniminer. There are different types of blocks; natural blocks, such as grass, stone, and ores, are randomly generated within the world. There are also blocks that the player can craft, such as a crafting table or furnace. Resources can be extracted from blocks by hand or with tools. Some of these resources appear as simple blocks in the player's inventory that can be placed elsewhere, while others are used as materials for crafting other blocks or tools. Other resources have no practical use at all. Some blocks cannot be broken by normal means in Survival mode, including bedrock, End Portal frames, and command blocks.

Mobs (from the English "Mob" - an abbreviation of "mobiles") are animals and other creatures that inhabit the world. Among them are zombies, which attack with melee weapons and summon other zombies; skeletons, which shoot arrows from a bow; spiders, which jump long distances and climb walls; and creepers, which explode when they approach the player. Rare mobs include the Skeleton Rider (a skeleton riding a spider) and the Zombie Rider (a child zombie riding a chicken); the Enderman, a tall black creature with purple eyes that becomes aggressive if the player looks at it; slimes, which spawn deep underground and in swamps, and some other mobs. Ghasts (aggressive flying mobs that spit fireballs) live in the Nether. Zombie Pigmen are neutral creatures, modified pigmen with golden swords; lava cubes similar to slimes but jumping slightly higher. The End world features the Ender Dragon and Endermen. Withers can be summoned in any dimension. There are friendly mobs that assist players: pigs, cows, chickens, sheep, rabbits, and squids, as well as six types of tamable mobs: wolves, ocelots, horses, donkeys, mules, and parrots. Wolves attack enemy mobs and mobs attacked by players or attacking them. Cats, or tamed ocelots, take no fall damage and repel creepers. Friendly mobs, except wolves, drop resources when killed, such as beef, pork, chicken, wool, leather, and ink sacs. Meat types change to fried if the mob was burning at the time of killing.

Currently, only one type of mob, villagers, represents non-player characters. Villagers spawn in villages and roam them.

In Minecraft, the Nether is a dimension accessible from the Overworld via a Nether portal. The Nether was described by Notch as "a completely new hellish world." This world is composed primarily of netherrack and has lava pools that generate within it. The Nether is inhabited by zombie pigmen, blazes, ghasts, wither skeletons, and lava cubes. The End is another dimension in the game, where the player battles the ender dragon. The End can be accessed through an End Portal found in any stronghold. The End is composed of enderstone and is inhabited by endermen. It also contains obsidian pillars and ender crystals, which heal the ender dragon. The Overworld is the beginning, and other dimensions can be accessed via an obsidian portal, but it is difficult to obtain. To access the End via an End Portal, you need 12 Uncommon Eyes, which are very difficult to obtain.

Crafting allows players to create new tools and blocks using items in their inventory. Crafting was first implemented in Indev, and Notch expanded the list of crafting recipes, adding new variants, blocks, and items. Crafting can be done using a 2x2 grid located in the inventory or a 3x3 grid provided by the workbench. Smelting, which converts blocks like iron ore into more useful forms (such as iron ingots), requires a furnace and fuel.

In Minecraft, resource mining is a core aspect of the game.[34] Mining blocks extracts ores and other materials from deep within the map. These ores include coal, iron, gold, redstone, diamonds, lapis lazuli, and emeralds. These resources are critical in the crafting of a number of useful items. Resource mining can involve digging shafts or cave exploration. Abandoned mineshafts can also be used to find minerals.

Potion brewing and enchanting are gameplay elements added in Minecraft 1.0. Potion brewing is used to create potions from various ingredients and water at a brewing stand. These potions are stored in flasks and cause effects based on the ingredients used, either when consumed by the player or when thrown at other mobs. Enchanting is used to improve armor, tools, and weapons using an enchanting table. Placing bookcases around this table allows access to more powerful enchantments that require more experience.

Physics in Minecraft is discrete: calculations are updated not continuously, but in discrete "ticks" (one tick is 1/20th of a second). Because of this, some effects may appear different than in real-world continuous-time physics. Sometimes, the game violates the laws of reality. In addition to the aforementioned peculiarities with liquid volumes, there are other instances where object behavior appears to be different from the real world. Some mechanics that players perceive as physics are actually game rules. For example, the fact that a player can place blocks at a distance, or the inventory features. Friction. It is responsible for the fact that minecarts without boosters eventually stop moving, items dropped on blocks eventually stop sliding, and also for how the character interacts with surfaces. There is also viscous friction: it noticeably slows the character and arrows when they are in water or lava. Fluid dynamics. Water and lava obey their own rules. In general, they flow downhill, and the steeper the slope, the faster the flow. Players can walk through liquids and occupy the same block as water or lava. However, there are some peculiarities: for example, you can swim against the current, even if the water is flowing straight down. Another point: liquids in the game don't have a hard volume limit—a block of water can expand and fill space. This sometimes leads to unexpected effects: if you place a solid block in a waterfall, it will "take away" some of the flow, and if you remove the last block, gravity will affect many objects: sand, gravel, anvils, activated TNT, dragon eggs, cement, vehicles (minecarts, boats), arrows in flight, thrown eggs, stalactites, and fishing bobbers. However, there's a catch: if a block is suspended in the air and supported by adjacent blocks (this sometimes happens in natural caves), it won't fall. And if you place or remove any of the adjacent blocks, the system will “recalculate” the support, and the hanging block will collapse.

Momentum transfer during collisions. When objects collide, momentum is exchanged. This underlies many game mechanics: for example, pressure plates are activated by the weight of the object or creature that steps on them. Physics in Minecraft also works like this: all blocks (except sand, gravel, and anvils), if the block underneath them is broken, will continue to float motionless.

When a player dies, the game searches for a suitable location to bring them back. By default, this is the world's respawn point—it's shared by all players on the server and is usually located where they first entered the world. If this point is unavailable (for example, because it's blocked by blocks), the game will select the nearest available location. Upon death, the player will also drop all their items except clothing.
