He was brought up in Wallingford, Oxfordshire in England.
He had made up his mind to be an actor at the age of 5 after watching the stage production of Oliver. His first captive audience comprised his sisters and while his parents had never gone to a theatre, they became his proud audience. His parents had been extremely supportive of him and would drop him for rehearsals in Clapham.
Jonathan has recalled that he was a ballet dancer for many years during his childhood so much so that there was once a time when it was the dance form that most people associated him with. It was later that he decided to get fully involved in acting. Jonathan has disclosed that the intense sideburns that he has sported, while playing the character of Jonathan in Bridgerton since December 2020, have been real.
He has revealed that he is a little superstitious having done things like flicking the watch five times before a show.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK published in January 2021, he revealed that his first celebrity crush was either Anita (played by Lara Cox) from Heartbreak High or Prince Eric from Little Mermaid.
Jonathan made his Met Gala debut in May 2023.
In October 2023, Jonathan was featured on the cover of V MAN.
