Ranpo is a young man with fair skin and short, messy black hair. His eyes, which remain closed most of the time, are emerald green.
His outfit consists of a brown investment coat draped over his shoulders, its color matching his hat and trousers. Underneath, he wears a dark gray blazer and a white button-down tie with a light and dark blue striped tie. He wears long white socks under his three-quarter-length trousers, covering most of his legs, and simple black shoes.
When he chooses to activate his "ability", he puts on the black glasses that Yukichi Fukuzawa gave him.

Ranpo prides himself on his "skill" which can deduce any mystery in a matter of seconds, with which he has solved countless cases. He is often boasted of his status as the greatest detective.

He is also shown to be quite childish, frequently mocking the other detectives in the agency and sometimes refusing to do jobs or cases for trivial reasons such as laziness or spite. However, he can become serious and calm when the situation calls for it. He is also incredibly intelligent and is praised for it by the rest of the Armed Detective Agency, even more so because he lacks skill. It is possible that his childish behavior is a coping mechanism for how he was traumatized by his childhood.

Although his colleagues seem to think that he is completely oblivious to the fact that he is not an ability user, he is aware that his Super Deduction is not actually an ability. However, since the agency has so much faith in him, he refuses to openly admit it to anyone in the agency, as he seems to dance around the issue with Akiko Yosano, but openly admits his lack of ability to Mushitaro Oguri and did so in Dead Apple as well.

Ranpo has been shown to be unable to complete simple tasks such as riding a train or finding his way home when not using his Super Deduction.

His ability, Super Deduction, (超推理, Chō Suiri in Japanese) allows him to solve any case in a matter of seconds, knowing who the culprit is and why he did it.

This ability is activated when he puts on his glasses. However, it is not a real ability, and only relies on his intellect, even though he believes it is.

Twelve years ago, Ranpo met the president of the agency, who was a bodyguard at the time. They met thanks to a crime scene, as Ranpo was looking for a job in an office where Fukuzawa's client had just been killed and later they went to a dinner, which Fukuzawa offered him in exchange for his help with the case, noticing his intelligence. After this, they began to forge a bond, as Fukuzawa was impressed by his story and his unique intelligence and finally, they agreed that Ranpo would stay with him until he got a job.

Fukuzawa and Ranpo initially argue, however as the days go by they start to sympathize and talk. This is clearly seen when they both go to the theater looking for work (Fukuzawa excused that he was looking for work for himself in the theater, in addition to going as a bodyguard at the request of the owner of the place, Lady Egawa. Really, he wanted to see if Ranpo would use his intelligence again in a crime scene) when after a fight, due to Ranpo's sensitivity, they go backstage; Right there, he gives him the glasses that he believed would help him leave his low self-esteem, because that way he would feel that the world would not have to understand him, if he was superior to the supernatural being. Also assuring him that he would be a great detective.

Thanks to this action, Ranpo goes in search of the murderer who threatened the theater (and for whom Fukuzawa was called) being kidnapped and Fukuzawa has to go rescue him. Since then, Fukuzawa decided to never leave Ranpo alone and protect him from everything, as well as find a place where he could develop his ability.

Ranpo likes: Sweets, feeling superior, praise, logical thinking, and fantasy stories.

Ranpo dislikes: Common sense, useless knowledge, doing simple daily tasks, or traveling alone on trains and being given orders by people he considers less intelligent than himself.
