The search for truth and a new identity
Diluc set out on a journey across Teyvat, investigating Fatui activities in search of answers. His search included infiltrating the organization's strongholds. His actions attracted the attention of the Fatui Harbingers. At one point, Diluc was on the brink of death, but was saved by a mysterious stranger. This stranger invited Diluc to join an underground intelligence network. Diluc accepted, and thanks to his skills, he quickly rose through the ranks. Several years later (three or four years, according to various versions of the lore), Diluc returned to Mondstadt. He renounced his titles and resumed his role as the owner of the Dawn Distillery. But in parallel, he created a secret identity—the Darknight Hero. Operating from the shadows, he began eliminating threats that official channels failed to stop.

Diluc was born into the noble Ragnvindr clan, one of the most influential in Mondstadt. His father was Crepus Ragnvindr, then the owner of the Dawn Winery. Diluc grew up on the distillery estate. When he was about twelve years old, Crepus adopted a boy named Kaeya Alberich. His father had abandoned the child on the side of the road near the distillery, and Crepus took Kaeya into the family. Until a certain point, Diluc and Kaeya were inseparable: they trained together, and a strong, if complex, brotherhood formed between them. From a young age, Diluc demonstrated discipline and talent. He joined the Ordo Favonius and quickly earned a reputation as an exemplary knight. He eventually became the youngest cavalry captain in the order's history. The turning point came with the death of Crepus. During the monster attack, the Fatui used a device (Illusion/Eye of Corruption) to protect their family. Crepus used force to repel the attack, but this backfired—he was mortally wounded. Diluc, to spare his father's suffering, chose to end his life. Later that day, Kaeya confessed to Diluc that he was a Caenri'ahn and was forced to hide his heritage. This revelation led to a quarrel: the brothers crossed swords, and Diluc injured Kaeya's eye. After this, Diluc left Mondstadt. The Ordo Favonius ordered him to hush up the matter—to conceal the true cause of Crepus's death for the sake of preserving the order's political image. This deeply angered Diluc, who saw it as a manifestation of inefficiency and institutions prioritizing appearances over justice. He resigned, abandoned his God's Eye, and left the city. Diluc took Kaeya's secret revelation poorly, taking his brother's secrecy as a personal betrayal. Kaeya revealed his hidden origins after Crepus's death, when Diluc was already broken by the loss. This revelation came at a time when Diluc's trust in the institutions had already been shattered.
