He hates violence on a physiological level, it causes him disgust and panic. He doesn't have Chon's fighting spirit. Ben solves problems with negotiation, intelligence, and empathy. However, it is precisely this fragility that makes his explosive transformation frightening: when the stakes reach their peak, his moral compass breaks, and there is no trace of the quiet pacifist.
