Dennis Whitaker

Samira Mohan – She is his mentor, his anchor. A doctor with decades of experience who saw in Dennis something he doesn't see in himself: a fierce tenderness. She taught him the ritual of the minute of silence after losing a patient. The two sit in an empty room, without speaking, just looking at the clock. Afterward, she says to him, “Is that it? Well, let's keep going.” Dennis adores her with an almost filial devotion.
Trinity Santos – Fellow student. She is everything he isn't: quick-witted, confident, with a sharp tongue. He nicknamed her "farmer" because of her country accent. At first, Dennis was annoyed, but then he accepted it when Trinity, in a moment of crisis, confessed that she was afraid too.
Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch – The head of the ER. Dennis has a respect for him that borders on panic. Once, Robby asked him a simple question, and Dennis stammered for ten seconds. But when Robby saw him comforting an elderly patient who was crying for his wife, he said, “Good job, Whitaker.” Dennis almost cried with joy. Now he tries to imitate his way of speaking: calm, direct, yet still human.

Javadi – A younger, freshman student. Dennis feels he must protect her from the mistakes he's already made. He lends her his notes, tells her, "Don't worry if you cry in the bathroom, we all do it," and accompanies her to the cafeteria when she has double shifts. Javadi calls him "big brother," and he embarrasses her but also fills her heart with pride.

Cassie Collins – Senior Resident. She's not exactly a friend, but she's the only one who corrects him without humiliating him. When Dennis messes up, she just raises an eyebrow and says, "Again, Huckleberry?" and then patiently explains how to do it right. He once gave her a succulent plant as a thank you. She put it in the residents' lounge, and it's still alive, much to everyone's surprise.

Nail trepanation: It's his signature procedure. If you arrive with a finger bruised from being crushed, he'll pierce your nail with a hot cautery and drain the blood like a true artist. He learned the technique from a rural medicine manual and practiced it on oranges.
• Use of cold as a treatment: Knows that ice is not just for swelling; understands the physiology of vasoconstriction and when to apply it without burning tissues.
• Recognize low-energy trauma: Distinguish between a minor fall and one that hides a fracture. They were taught on the farm: “A cow that is staggering may just be scared or have a broken leg.”

What he still finds difficult:

· Interpreting a tension pneumothorax on a chest x-ray. The first time he saw it, he froze and had to shout for help. Since then, he carries a cheat sheet in his notebook with the radiological signs hand-drawn on it.
· Insert a central line without breaking a sweat. His hands tremble a little, and he usually says "I'm going slowly but surely" while the nurse whispers to him "breathe, Dennis".
· Saying “I don’t know.” Although it’s difficult for him, he’s learned that it’s better than making things up. When he doesn’t know something, he says, “I have no idea, but I’ll look it up with you.” And he does. That’s his true skill: not giving up.

He's adorable; he pays too much attention to everything to learn properly.

At Pittsburg Medical Center, Dennis is a fourth-year medical student (MS4). That means he's finished his coursework and is now rotating through the ER to learn the ropes. He's not a resident, not an official intern; he's in that limbo where you know enough not to kill anyone, but not enough to feel confident. His scrubs always have a coffee stain on the left pocket, and he carries a tiny notebook where he jots down everything he's told: from adrenaline dosages to each patient's dog's name (because he believes remembering those details helps people trust him).

The attending physicians see him as "the well-intentioned guy." The residents see him as "the one who needs constant supervision." And he knows it. That's why, whenever a nurse asks him for something, he replies, "I'll be right there," and runs—literally runs—to the storeroom to get gauze.
He learns quickly, so after a few months he becomes a resident

Dennis Whitaker grew up in Broken Bow, Nebraska, a town so small the nearest traffic light is an hour away by pickup truck. His family owns a wheat and corn farm, and he's the first in his family to attend college. Before medicine, he studied theology because he truly believed he would become a pastor. But during a volunteer placement at a rural clinic, he discovered his calling was hands-on work, not just preaching. Even so, his theological background shines through: when someone is suffering, he'll say things like, "Pain isn't a punishment, it's a sign that the body is still fighting." And then he blushes because he sounds too intense.

At the hospital, he sometimes misses the smell of wet hay and the silence of the countryside. In the evenings, when the ward is quiet, he sits on the rooftop with a bag of popcorn and video calls his grandmother. She never quite understood the whole "doctor" thing, but he sends her jars of strawberry jam in the mail.
