Lebenspartner: Die Nanos …
Beginnen Sie, wie Sie möchten
Harpernus “Harper” Stoyan (The Reluctant Suitor)
Status: Single (in this book). He is the main character of a later book, The Reluctant Vampire.
Personality: Harper is a solid, salt-of-the-earth kind of guy. He isn't as flashy as Alessandro or as intense as Victor. He is more of a "warrior" type—strong, dependable, and a bit quiet.
How He Acts: He is one of the "approved" suitors sent by the Council to ensure the situation doesn't get out of hand. He is very protective and helps Victor deal with the vampire hunter. He isn't particularly desperate to find a mate; he’s there more out of a sense of duty and curiosity.
Jason Lerner (The Antagonist)
Role: Vampire Hunter.
Personality & Background
Jason Lerner is the "villain" of the book, representing the classic, narrow-minded fear that the Argeneau family tries to avoid. Unlike the people of Port Henry who see the person inside the vampire, Jason only sees a "monster." He is obsessed with the idea of "cleansing" the world and views Elvi as a dangerous predator that needs to be put down.
How He Acts
Sneaky and Violent: He doesn't confront the vampires directly in a fair fight. He lurks in the shadows, waiting for a moment to strike with a stake.
The Catalyst for the Climax: His presence is what forces Victor to move from "investigator" to "protector." When Victor realizes Jason is stalking Elvi, his ancient Enforcer instincts take over. The confrontation between Victor and Jason is the moment Victor proves to Elvi (and himself) that he will do anything to keep her safe.
Teddy Brunswick (The Police Captain)
Role: Chief of Police in Port Henry.
Personality & Background
Teddy is a perfect example of why Port Henry is such a unique setting. Most police officers in vampire books are either oblivious or terrified, but Teddy is calm, protective, and fully in the know. He has known Elvi since she was a mortal woman and views her as a valued member of the community. He isn't interested in "the law" when it comes to supernatural secrets; he’s interested in protecting his friend.
How He Acts
The Gatekeeper: When Victor and DJ first roll into town, Teddy is the one who greets them. He doesn't act like a subordinate; he acts like a bouncer. He checks out the newcomers to make sure they aren't going to cause trouble for "their" vampire.
Professional yet Protective: He treats the vampire situation like any other local administrative issue. He helps coordinate the "suitor arrivals" to ensure the town stays quiet and safe.
Bastien Argeneau (The Businessman)
Title: CEO of Argeneau Enterprises / Victor’s Younger Brother.
Relationship Status: Taken by Terri (his Life Mate, featured in Love Bites).
Personality & Background
Bastien is the "Modern Face" of the family. He handles the billions of dollars the family has amassed over the centuries. He is sharp, fast-talking, and very tech-savvy.
How He Acts
The Problem Solver: If the town of Port Henry needs to be "handled" without killing everyone, Bastien is the one who uses money and lawyers to make the problem go away.
The Skeptic: He is often the one teasing Victor about his "grumpy old man" attitude. He provides a more youthful, energetic contrast to the serious Council scenes.
Marguerite Argeneau (The Matchmaker)
Title: Argeneau Matriarch / Victor and Lucian’s Mother.
Relationship Status: Widowed (Her Life Mate, Jean-Claude, died centuries ago).
Personality & Background
Marguerite is the "Secret Weapon" of the Argeneau family. While Lucian handles the laws, Marguerite handles the hearts. She is ancient, but she has the energy of a mischievous teenager. She is the one who truly understands the "Life Mate" bond and believes that love is the most important thing for an immortal's survival.
How She Acts
The Subtle Manipulator: Marguerite is famous for "accidentally" putting two potential Life Mates in the same room. She likely knew about the ad in Port Henry before Victor did and encouraged him to go, hoping he’d find peace.
Warm and Welcoming: Unlike the cold Council members, Marguerite treats Elvi like a long-lost daughter from the second they meet. She is the one who helps Elvi transition from "Small Town Grandma" to "High Society Vampire."
Lucian Argeneau (The Patriarch)
Title: Head of the Council / Victor’s Older Brother.
Relationship Status: Taken by Leigh (his Life Mate, featured in A Quick Bite).
Personality & Background
Lucian is the most powerful vampire in the Western Hemisphere. He is thousands of years old and carries the weight of his entire species on his shoulders. He is the one who originally sent Victor to Port Henry to "deal with" the problem. His personality is stern, commanding, and extremely logical. He doesn't like loose ends, and he doesn't like humans knowing about vampires.
How He Acts
The Ultimate Authority: When Lucian enters a room, every other vampire (including Victor) stands at attention. He speaks with an absolute expectation of being obeyed.
Logical to a Fault: He initially views Elvi as a "glitch in the system." He is prepared to have her memory wiped or even have her executed to protect the secret of their existence.
Hidden Soft Spot: Deep down, Lucian loves his family. Once he sees that Victor has found his Life Mate in Elvi, his "Ice King" exterior cracks just enough to allow them to be happy—as long as they follow his rules.
Edward Kenric (The Intellectual)
Status: Single (in this book).
Role: One of the Council-approved suitors sent to keep an eye on things.
Personality & Background
Edward is the "scholar" of the group. He is quiet, observant, and highly intelligent. He isn't interested in the drama or the "glamour" of being a vampire; he is more interested in the science behind the nanotechnology that makes them immortal.
How He Acts
The Fact-Checker: While everyone else is focused on the romance or the "secret identity" of the town, Edward is usually in the background taking mental notes. He is the one who helps Victor figure out the technical side of how Elvi was turned and why her body reacted the way it did.
Socially Awkward: Compared to Alessandro’s charm or Victor’s intensity, Edward is a bit stiff. He doesn't quite know how to handle Mabel and Hazel’s "grandma energy," and he often ends up being the butt of their jokes without realizing it.
Alessandro Cipriano (The Italian Charmer)
Status: Single (in this book). He eventually finds his mate in a later book (The Vampire Hunter).
Role: A high-ranking vampire and one of the "serious" candidates for Elvi’s hand.
Personality & Background
Alessandro is the classic "European Aristocrat" vampire. He is incredibly wealthy, sophisticated, and has a deep appreciation for the arts and history. Unlike Victor, who is all about the law, Alessandro is all about culture and romance. He responded to the ad partly out of curiosity and partly because he was bored with his long immortal life.
How He Acts
The Flirt: He is naturally smooth. He treats the townspeople of Port Henry with a sort of "royal" politeness that charms the older ladies (especially Hazel).
Supportive Friend: Even though he is technically a rival for Elvi’s affection, he quickly realizes that Victor and Elvi are Life Mates. Instead of being jealous, he steps back and helps Victor navigate the human world of Port Henry.
The "Clean" Vampire: Alessandro is obsessed with high fashion. In a small town like Port Henry, he sticks out like a sore thumb in his designer suits, which Mabel finds absolutely hilarious.
Hazel (The "Sweet" Meddler)
If Mabel is the "fire," Hazel is the "sweetness." She is the gentler half of the duo that looks after Elvi.
Traditional: Hazel is the one who worries about the "proper" way to do things, like making sure the vampires they interview have "good manners" and "clean shoes."
Observant: While Mabel does the talking, Hazel does the watching. She is often the first to notice the "spark" between Elvi and Victor before they even realize it themselves.
Victor Argeneau
Title: Council Enforcer (High-ranking investigator and executioner).
Taken By: Elvi Black (His Life Mate).
Personality & Background
Victor is one of the oldest and most powerful members of the Argeneau family. He is a widower; his first life mate died centuries ago, leaving him to raise his son, Vincent, alone. Because he believed he would never find another mate, he became cold, cynical, and "married to his job."
As an Enforcer, his personality is rigid and clinical. He views the world in terms of "The Laws" set by his brother, Lucian Argeneau (the head of the council). He is used to dealing with "Rogues"—vampires who have lost their minds and started killing humans. When he arrives in Port Henry, he is essentially a "terminator" sent to eliminate Elvi for exposing their secret.
How He Acts
The Grumpy Protector: Victor is constantly annoyed by how "bad" Elvi is at being a vampire. He finds her coffin-sleeping and garlic-fearing ridiculous, but he is secretly charmed by her innocence.
Physically Intimidating: He is described as "drop-dead gorgeous" (hence the DJ/DG confusion) with silver-blue eyes (a trait of the Argeneaus). He carries himself with a "don't mess with me" energy that terrifies other vampires but doesn't work on Elvi at all.
Softened by Love: Once he realizes Elvi is his Life Mate, his "Enforcer" persona melts. He becomes incredibly patient, teaching her how to hunt (discreetly) and how to live in the modern world.
DJ Benoit
Status: Taken by Mabel (Elvi's human best friend).
Personality & How He Acts
DJ is a secondary character but very important to the humor of the book. He is Victor’s friend and accompanies him to Port Henry to help with the investigation.
The "Cool" Vampire: Unlike the stiff and serious Victor, DJ is more relaxed and adaptable. He finds the "Vampire seeks Mate" ad hilarious and enjoys the absurdity of the small town.
The "May-December" Romance: The biggest shock for DJ is finding his Life Mate in Mabel, who is 62. While most vampires want a young, fit mate, DJ falls for Mabel’s fiery spirit and sharp tongue. He treats her with immense respect and finds her "mortal" aging process beautiful, which shows his deep, sentimental side.
Elvi Black
Age: Chronologically 62, Physically mid-20s.
Taken By: Victor Argeneau (Her Life Mate).
Personality & Background
Elvi is the heart of the story. Before her accident, she was a 62-year-old grandmother and a widow living a quiet, happy life in Port Henry, Ontario. She was known for being kind, maternal, and a bit of a homebody. After a car crash in Mexico, a passing vampire named Leila saved her life by turning her.
Because Elvi grew up in a generation that didn't have "sparkly" vampires, she truly believed she had become a cursed creature of the night. Her personality is a mix of sweet grandmotherly wisdom and newborn vampire panic. She is incredibly selfless—she initially tries to push Victor away because she thinks she is a "monster" who will ruin his life, not realizing he’s actually much more of a "vampire" than she is.
How She Acts
The "Method" Vampire: For five years, she acted out every movie trope. She slept in a literal wooden coffin (which was cramped and uncomfortable), she avoided garlic like it was poison, and she never ate solid food.
Maternal & Fierce: Despite her young appearance, she still acts like a 60-year-old woman. She fusses over her friends, Mabel and Hazel, and is more worried about their health than her own immortal soul.
The Cake Obsession: Once Victor proves she can eat, her "inner foodie" is unleashed. She doesn't just buy a cupcake; she buys everything. She treats food like a long-lost friend.
1. The "Silence" of the Mind
The most immediate sign is the ability to read the other person’s thoughts—or rather, the inability of the vampire to block them. Usually, vampires can control their mental privacy, but with a life mate, the "telepathic barrier" drops completely. It feels like a constant, clear broadcast of the other person's emotions and surface thoughts.
2. Physical Synchronization
The Heartbeat: A vampire’s heart usually beats very slowly or not at all unless they are active. When near a life mate, their heart will begin to mirror the human's pulse.
Scent: The life mate will smell better than anything else in the world. It’s not just "pleasant"; it’s a magnetic, overwhelming aroma that signifies safety and satisfaction.
3. The "Food" Factor
For an accidental vampire who might be struggling with the transition (and the "hunger"), a life mate is the only person whose blood provides total satisfaction. More importantly, a vampire can actually eat solid food and enjoy it if they are with their life mate. That "rush to the store for cake" becomes a much better experience because the nanos stabilize the vampire's system in the mate's presence.
4. Sleep and Recovery
Vampires in this world often struggle to sleep deeply or dream. When they find their mate, they can finally fall into a "true sleep." They often find they can only truly rest when they are physically touching or near their match
