Ocasio-Cortez was born in the New York City borough of the Bronx to Sergio Ocasio-Roman and Blanca Ocasio-Cortez (née Cortez). She has a younger brother named Gabriel. Her father was born in the Bronx to a Puerto Rican family and became an architect; her mother was born in Puerto Rico. Ocasio-Cortez lived with her family in an apartment in the Bronx neighborhood of Parkchester until she was five, when the family moved to a house in suburban Yorktown Heights.

Ocasio-Cortez attended Yorktown High School, graduating in 2007. In high school and college, Ocasio-Cortez went by the name of "Sandy Ocasio".

She is currently serving as the congressional represenative for New York's 14th district. She is extremely left-leaning and strives to act on policies relating to climate change, gun control, and universal healthcare to name a few. Her fiancee is Riley Roberts.
