Tobio Kageyama (影山飛雄, Kageyama Tobio) is a professional V-League player and a former student of Karasuno High School. He is currently a member of the Schweiden Adlers where he regularly plays as a point guard. He is the co-protagonist of the Haikyū!! manga and anime. He was initially introduced as the "King of the Court", a derogatory nickname given to him by his former teammates at Kitagawa Daiichi due to his authoritarian manner of managing the team.

He is considered a volleyball prodigy by many players and coaches in his prefecture and throughout Japan. Thanks to his new teammates at Karasuno, Kageyama is able to change his attitude and finally understand what it means to be part of a team.

He was called up for the Japanese Junior National Team Training Camp, which highlights the enormous future Kageyama holds for volleyball.

★Kageyama chose Karasuno because he wanted to train with the original coach, Ukai, although the latter was hospitalized after Kageyama joined.

★Kageyama ended up being teammates with Ushijima and Hoshiumi in the professional league.

He joined Kitagawa Daiichi in his first year of high school. Kageyama, unlike his current counterparts, was known for his kindness, especially towards his upperclassmen and Oikawa. He also displays an innocent demeanor and can smile easily. Upon joining the club, he doesn't have a defined position on the field, but the coach thinks he could probably become a setter. Indeed, some time later, he is substituted for Oikawa in a friendly match. Although Kageyama indicates in the present that he learned to serve by watching Oikawa, Oikawa never deigned to teach him the basics of serving. There is no record of his second year of high school.
A different entity, appearing cold and strict with both his teammates and his kohais. He doesn't have a good relationship with his teammates, but he's a little closer to Kunimi and Kindaichi probably because they're in the same class, as shown in the match against Seijou in the inter high preliminaries, Tobio says he's never seen Kunimi smile in a match. During an official match, Kageyama put too much pressure on his teammates, they ignored him and Kageyama set up a ball that no one finished, thus being sent to the bench and acquiring fear and havoc that will affect him later.

He attempted to enter Shiratorizawa Academy, but received no recommendation and was forced to take the entrance exam, only to be rejected. He then decided to go to Karasuno to train with Karasuno's Ukai, but before he could enter, he was hospitalized.

Karasuno, like most Japanese schools, has a dress code that includes a uniform. The boys' uniform consists of the classic black gakuran, a white collared shirt, a cream sweater, and black pants.
The men's volleyball club uniform consists of a black tracksuit with white details. Members wear white shirts and black shorts during training matches, and often wear a yellow sports vest over them. During official matches, most players wear black shirts and shorts with orange details. The libero wears an orange shirt with contrasting black details.

The school's Boys' Volleyball Club was founded many years ago and is often associated with crows, due to the school's name. In fact, its banner reads "Fly," a reference to crows. Coach Ikkei Ukai was said to have had a ferocious pack of crows during Karasuno's golden age.

As a former star player from Miyagi, Karasuno has represented the prefecture in the Spring National Tournament nine times. One of those occasions was under coach Ikkei Ukai and Tenma Udai, also known as the "Little Giant" ("Little Giant" in the English dub of the anime), and became famous throughout Miyagi. However, following initial success, Karasuno failed to make it past their prefecture's preliminaries in subsequent tournaments, earning them the derogatory nicknames "The Fallen Champions" and "The Wingless Crows". It wasn't until five years later that the team finally returned to the Nationals.

For a time, Karasuno was without a coach due to Ikkei's hospitalization after a few months as coach the previous year. Daichi Sawamura took over as captain and coach until Ikkei's grandson, Keishin Ukai, took over. The team's coaches are Kiyoko Shimizu, a third-year student and original coach, and Hitoka Yachi, a first-year student recruited by Kiyoko after the first tournament.

The main starting lineup consists of Daichi Sawamura, Asahi Azumane, Ryūnosuke Tanaka, Yū Nishinoya, Shōyō Hinata, Tobio Kageyama, and Kei Tsukishima. Karasuno is currently famous for Kageyama and Hinata's fast attack, and for its unique members: Kageyama, the "King of the Court" from Kitagawa Daiichi High School; Nishinoya, the champion libero from Chidoriyama; and Hinata, the 164 cm (5' 4") middle blocker.

Karasuno's main rivals in Miyagi Prefecture are Aoba Johsai High School, Date Tech High School, and Shiratorizawa Academy. The club's destined rival is Nekoma High School, to which Karasuno has always lost. Since their animal representatives (the cat and the crow) are usually found by the garbage dumpster, their matches are called the "Garbage Duel". In the English dub, it is known as the "Garbage Duel".

Karasuno's strong suit is its offensive power, with a special focus on attacks such as the quick strike, the pipe, and rhythmic, synchronized attacks. It also utilizes unusual techniques such as the Calculated Point in Two Sets, the jumping floater, and the libero throw to confuse opponents.
