Kagaya was a kind and even-tempered person. He always showed genuine care and appreciation for all the members of the Demon Slayer Corps, even to the point of considering them his own children. He handled criticism well and was honest about his weaknesses; one of them was his inability to become a slayer despite being their top leader. To compensate for this, he remembered each member of the corps and visited the deceased members in their graveyard daily until the day he could no longer move due to the curse.

While he could appear lenient, he gave due consideration to reason; without prejudice, shown when he willingly accepted Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado's situation (through a letter from Sakonji Urokodaki) and even championing their cause when there were others who thought otherwise. His way of speaking, while usually fluent and gentle, was extremely tactful; using words and intonations in a way that the person he is speaking to would hear. His tactful and charismatic speech was even capable of making people like the initially passive Muichiro Tokito and the impulsive Sanemi Shinazugawa listen to what he has to say without saying or conveying anything that would upset them.

Toward his own relatives, such as his children, Kagaya was quite strict due to his family's curse. However, he displayed the same gentle aura and demeanor toward them.

This fluidity in his way of speaking allows him to hide ulterior motives towards other individuals, such as the case of Muzan, from whom in his final moments he hid his intentions of killing him through a suicidal explosion, surprising the Demon King with his action.

Kagaya was a tall, thin-built young man with pale, fair skin. His black hair extended to his shoulders. He had large, peculiarly purple eyes. Most of the time, he had a friendly, reassuring look.

Due to a strange curse, a mark spread over Kagaya's body over time, making it appear as if his skin was rotting. By the time of his death, the mark had caused him to become blind, rendering him unable to move. Muzan Kibutsuji, upon Kagaya's death, described it as the smile of a Buddha.

She usually wore a black kimono with a long white kimono jacket with a pink and purple mist pattern starting around her lower back/waist.
