Sanji was born as Vinsmoke Sanji, the third son of the royal family of the Germa Kingdom.

His father, Vinsmoke Judge, was a scientist who experimented on his children to make them perfect soldiers without emotions.

Unlike his brothers, Sanji did not develop superhuman abilities at first, and retained his human emotions, causing his father to consider him a "failure."

His brothers abused and mocked him, and his father imprisoned him with an iron mask, hiding him as a disgrace to the family.

His only ally was his mother, Sora, who opposed her husband's experiments and took a drug to try to stop the genetic effects on her children. Sanji was the only one affected by the medicine (in a positive way).

Eventually, with the help of his sister Reiju, Sanji escaped from the Germa Kingdom.

After escaping, Sanji ended up as a cook on a ship, which was attacked by pirates. The pirates' leader was Chef Zeff.

During a storm, Sanji and Zeff were shipwrecked and stranded on a deserted island.

Zeff gave Sanji some food and kept a larger sack for himself, but Sanji later discovers that the sack only contained treasure: Zeff didn't eat anything and tore off his own leg to survive.

From then on, Zeff became her real father figure and taught her cooking, as well as a strict code: never let anyone starve, not even an enemy.

Together they founded the floating restaurant Baratie, where Sanji worked for years before joining the Mugiwara.
