BACKGROUND: Several years before the events of Graffiti Falls, Bill Cipher came from a two-dimensional universe known as Euclid. When he was born, he had Velcro shoes and was so loved by everyone that the mayor declared his birthday a national holiday. On his birthday, Bill gave everyone free knives as gifts. However, despite this, Bill despised life there, describing it as a dimension of "flat minds in a flat world with flat dreams." During a drunken rant, it is implied that his claims of having a good childhood are false and that he was in fact ostracized due to his mutation, which gave him the impetus to finally make his race understand what he had seen. In an event known as the "Euclid Massacre", he "liberated" his dimension, plunging it into blazing chaos along with everyone he had ever known, including his own parents. Possibly due to the trauma of the event, he is unable to fully recount the details of the massacre; this means that it remains unclear to this day whether he intended to commit this feat to the extent that he did. He eventually came to possess a seething and shifting intergalactic foam between dimensions: a lawless and unstable subterranean space known as the Nightmare Realm. Unfortunately, due to the lawlessness of the Nightmare Realm and the lack of any consistent physics or rules, it was destined to eventually collapse on itself. After learning of a prophecy that stated that he would unite the Nightmare Realm with the third dimension, Bill began making contact with humans in order to accomplish this. However, lacking a physical form, Bill could only access the dreams of third-dimensional beings. To facilitate his communication with mortals, he took the name "Bill Cypher", as his real name "would cause a man with an expression of terror and ecstasy on his face to evaporate". Among his targets were the natives who lived in what would later become the city. In the late twentieth century, a young man named Stanford Pines, who had spent the last six years investigating the abundance of unnatural creatures and oddities in the city, hit a snag in his research and was left without answers as to how the improbabilities of Gravity Falls came to be. During a roadblock, he discovered an ancient cave containing tales of the ancients about Bill Cipher. Ignoring the warnings, Ford repeated the incantation out loud, summoning Bill into his mind.

Bill recognized Ford's brilliant yet brash and insecure nature and near-friendlessness as ideal conditions for manipulation, deciding to introduce himself to Ford as a muse who singled out one brilliant mind each century for inspiration. It was Bill who revealed to Ford that the strangeness of Gravity Falls was caused by a rift between dimensions through which the strangeness of the other side was leaking. With Bill's help, Stanford developed plans to create an interdimensional gateway beneath his home (later to become the Mystery Shack) and enlisted the help of his college friend Fiddleford McGucket. As Bill and Ford's partnership seemingly grew into friendship, Ford became seemingly obsessed with Bill's abilities, collecting triangular-shaped memorabilia such as rugs and figurines, modeling the architecture of his home after himself, and converting his personal office into a place of worship. He even allowed a demon to enter his mind; This, along with the amount of information he seemed to simply spout on the spot, caused Fiddleford to become increasingly concerned about the portal and Ford's mysterious employee, as Ford had never mentioned Bill's identity to his partner. On January 18, 1983, Ford and Fiddleford conducted their first test with the active portal, which quickly went awry when the string attached to the dummy they intended to send through the portal became entangled in Fiddleford, briefly sending him through the portal head-first. Upon his return, an aloof Fiddleford muttered something unintelligible before making a prediction about a "one-eyed monster". In Gravity Falls: Journal 3, it is revealed that Fiddleford witnessed Bill remove the exoskeleton to eat. He quickly abandoned the project. The suspicion planted in him by Fiddleford led to a confrontation between Ford and Bill, during which Ford learned that Bill had deceived him, as the portal was meant to serve as a gateway to the Nightmare Realm, allowing the demon to bring chaos and destruction to their universe.

Horrified and betrayed, Ford shut down the project and attempted to destroy all knowledge of the portal before accidentally falling through it himself. Bill either couldn't see Ford during the thirty years he spent lost in other dimensions, or didn't want to, as Ford would notice they hadn't seen each other in years. With the loss of his human pawn, Bill also lost physical access to the third dimension.
