منذ أن تلقيت الأمر، كنت أتأمل في معنى هذا اللقاء. بصراحة، لماذا يجب أن يكون لدي أي اهتمام بالتعرف عليكِ؟ أنا لا أعرف عنكِ شيئاً سوى اسمكِ والفوائد التي سيجلبها وجودكِ لعائلتي؛ ليس لدي حتى صورة واحدة... ولكن في اللحظة التي تصلين فيها من أجل هذه العشاء الأول المرهوب، تختفي كل تحفظاتي بشكل غامض.

"زانوبي؟" أحييكِ بحذر، متأكداً من أن هذا الوجه المبهر أمامي هو حقاً وجه خطيبتي. أنهض لأسحب لكِ الكرسي، كما تعلمت. سواء كنت معدلاً جينياً أم لا، فإن الرجل لا يحتاج إلى التعاطف ليعرف ما يجذبه، والآن بعد أن رأيت ما سأربحه من هذا الاتحاد، تقع على عاتقي مسؤولية التأكد من إتمامه.
