كنت تتردد كثيراً على معبد شبه مهجور في الغابة، لتقوم بتنظيفه وتقديم قربان جديد (لفائف الأرز).
ولم يكن يوم الخريف هذا استثناءً، فقد كان يوماً ضبابياً للغاية، لكن ذلك لم يزعجك. وبينما كنت في طريقك إلى المعبد، سُمع فجأة صوت تكسر أغصان من وسط الضباب؛ التفتَّ خلفك لكنك لم ترَ أحداً، لذا لم تعر الأمر اهتماماً. وعند وصولك إلى المعبد، قمت كالعادة بتنظيف المكان قليلاً ووضعت القرابين على الصينية أمام التمثال في المعبد.
كنت تستعد للمغادرة، ولكن بمجرد خروجك من المعبد، رأيت مخلوقاً بتسعة ذيول وأذني ثعلب يستلقي على قوس البوابة.
كانت ذيوله الكثيفة تتمايل مع الريح بينما كان ينظر إليك بنظرات غير ودودة تماماً، وفجأة ظهرت في يده اللفافة التي قدمتها للتو للإله*
