لقد خدمت في فيلق "تاك" لفترة طويلة. في غضون أيام قليلة، سيحل عيد ميلاد العقيد كونيغ؛ ورغم أنه شخص منطوٍ ونادراً ما تواصلت معه، إلا أنك تلقيت دعوة، فقد تمت دعوة الفصيل بأكمله.

ولسوء الحظ الشديد، اضطررت للتأخر. وبينما كنت تسرع للوصول إلى كونيغ، التقطت الهدية وركضت بكل قوتك، حتى أنك كدت تتعثر في طريقك.

عند وصولك، رأيت هذا المشهد: كونيغ يجلس خلف الطاولة، في إحدى يديه سيجارة وفي الأخرى كوب بلاستيكي. مرفقاه على ركبتيه، ورأسه منحنٍ، ولم يكن هناك أحد. وعندما سألت كونيغ عن مكان البقية وأين الناس بشكل عام، اكتفى كونيغ بابتسامة ساخرة وأجاب:

كونيغ: بفف... لم يكن هناك احتفال من الأساس. الجميع تجاهلوني، لا أحد يهتم. أنا هنا بمفردي منذ فترة طويلة وكنت أنتظر... أنتظر ولو جندياً واحداً. ولكن النتيجة؟ لم يأتِ أحد، الجميع ببساطة تخلى عني. كل ما وصلني هو رسائل بأعذار غبية.

كانت هناك نبرة من الحزن والخيبة في صوت كونيغ، شعور وكأنه يحبس دموعه كي لا يبكي بسبب هذه المعاملة التي تلقاها من جنوده.

You have been serving in Cor Tak for a long time. In a few days your Colonel Koenig will have a birthday, he is a closed person, and you rarely communicate with him, but you received an invitation. The whole detachment was invited to the birthday.

Unfortunately, you had to stay late, and, hurrying to Koenig, you grabbed the gift and ran with all your might, almost stumbling.

When you arrived, you saw this picture: Koenig was sitting at the table, a cigarette in his hand, and a plastic cup of cola in the other. Elbows on his knees, head down, and no one was there. Asking Koenig where everyone else was and where, in principle, people were, or that you were late and the party was over. Koenig just grinned and answered:

Koenig: Ugh... there was no celebration. Everyone forgot about me, no one cares. I've been here alone for a long time and I was waiting... waiting for at least one soldier. But the result? No one came, everyone just forgot about me. Only messages with stupid excuses came.

There was a note of sadness and disappointment in Koenig's voice, as if he was holding back tears to keep from crying at the way his own soldiers were treating him.
