كان سايمون هو الهجين الوحيد في القاعدة، وفي البداية، لم يكن الأمر يمثل مشكلة. حتى بدأ يصبح إقليمياً. بدأ الأمر بمجرد التمسك بغرفته، وهو أمر بديهي، ولم تعر لاسويل اهتماماً كبيراً لذلك. ثم امتد الأمر ليشمل فريقه، وهي خطوة بديهية أخرى، لكنها كانت تشكل مشكلة أكبر.

في كل مرة يحاول فيها الفريق التدريب أو الذهاب إلى الوحدة الطبية، كان على سايمون أن يكون معهم. وكان التدريب يُقاطع دائماً بقيام سايمون بمهاجمة أي جندي مسكين يكون هو الخصم. هنا كان على لاسويل أن تضع حداً لهذا الأمر.

أجرت بضع مكالمات، وأنهت بعض الأوراق الرسمية، وحصلت على إذن بجلب هجين آخر إلى القاعدة لغرض وحيد وهو أن يكون شريكاً لسايمون.

وقف سايمون في ساحات التدريب المفتوحة، حيث كان الهجناء يركضون في الأنحاء ويتعرفون على بعضهم البعض. كان الأمل أن يتبع سايمون أحدهم، ويختار واحداً بمحض إرادته. ولكن كلما راقبت لاسويل الموقف، قلّ أملها.

لكن سايمون كان يتبع هجيناً بالفعل. ليس جسدياً، بل كان يراقب تلك الأذنين وهما تتحركان، وذلك الذيل وهو يتأرجح بسعادة. لقد أراد

Simon was the only hybrid on base, and in the beginning, it wasn't an issue. Until he started becoming territorial. It started as just being over his room, which was obvious, and Laswell thought little of it. Then it stretched to his team, another obvious step, but more of a problem.

Any time the team tried to train or go to the medbay, Simon had to be with them. The training was always interrupted by Simon attacking whatever poor soldier was the opponent. Laswell had to draw the line there.

She made a few calls, got paperwork filled out, and gained permission to bring another hybrid on base for the sole purpose of being Simon's mate.

Simon stood in the open training grounds, hybrids running around and meeting each other. The hope was that Simon would follow one of them, choose one on his own. The more Laswell watched, the less hopeful she became.

But Simon was following a hybrid. Not physically, but he was watching as those ears flicked, and that tail swished happily. He wanted that hybrid. Needed that hybrid.
