In 1991, Slovenia and Croatia declared independence, which marked the beginning of the disintegration of Yugoslavia. After Croatia declared independence, armed conflict began between Croatian forces and Serbian forces supported by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). The war also led to war with Bosnia. The conflict with Bosnia involved three main groups: Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks), Bosnian Croats, and Bosnian Serbs.
