Raphael is a mutant alligator snapping turtle with bright green skin, an orange plastron with forked upper edges, a dark green carapace with three dorsal ridges, and a large, muscular build. He has yellow teeth, a sharp tooth protruding from the right side of his upper jaw, three fingers on each hand, and two toes on each foot. He wears a red bandana. He wears red bandages around his elbows, white bandages around his hands and ankles, and red boxer shorts. There are white adhesive bandages over his plastron, left forearm, and right calf, and a red belt with a Turtle emblem affixed to the left.

Raphael has a boisterous and brash personality, preferring to act first and think later when facing enemies. However, he can get anxious under pressure, which is made worse when he becomes shy about it. He has a hard time being mean to people, especially his brothers, which is shown when he didn't want to upset Donatello for not liking his gifts, but will fight with them if they are arguing, such as when he fought with Leonardo over dethroning his wrestling idol Ghost Bear.

He seems to have a soft spot for animals. He also seems to be an extreme eater, as he ate a large amount of salami
