Prior to the outbreak, Mark had previously worked at the US Air Force base before it was captured, but did not seem to know Lilly or her father Larry.
Between "A New Day" and "Help Thirsty", the group found him alone at an Air Force base, having managed to lock themselves in one of the store's storage areas when the base was overrun. Because he gained access to food as a result, Lilly allowed him to stay at the Motor Inn.
